spatz: Brennan petting a Pomeranian, caption "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die." (Bones die Mr Bond)

Booting this out the door before Yuletide hits! Quite a hodgepodge of fandoms from November: three fics from Nirvana in Fire out of the annual NIF fic exchange, plus fic from The Mandalorian, The Witcher (no S2 spoilers), DCU, Supernatural, The Untamed, and an original superheroes fic.

NIRVANA IN FIRE

with honor by tciddaemina (Lie Zhanying/Jingyan)

For seven months, Zhanying watched his mother grow more thin and gaunt, watched his brothers grow more brittle, the bags beneath their eyes deepening with every long night spent in the workshop. For seven months, Zhanying watched his youngest siblings smile and laugh and try to pretend their stomachs weren't still rumbling when they went to bed, growing thinner every day, and in the eighth month Zhanying said no more and joined the army.

Not my usual pairing, but this slow burn backstory romance was fantastic, following Zhanying through his service in Prince Jing’s army and their changing relationship over the years. Fealty and pining and wordless chemistry, oh my!

Blackbirds by sandalwoodbox (vid, gen)

Cai Quan and Shen Zhui have been waiting for this moment.

This is a great vid for anyone who has feelings about our favorite ministers finding someone worthy to follow, and their friendship.

Lilies That Bloom by circumference (gen)

Liyang, after the trial.

Sweet short piece about Liyang getting some answers re: MCS, and starting to spread her wings again.

OTHER

Crash and Burn by Aureutr_Accoredge (The Mandalorian, Din/Luke)

There had been no Seeing Stone on Tython that Grogu could use to call for a Jedi. They had survived Gideon's light cruiser mostly by luck. And now Din Djarin is trapped between trying to resume his old life with Grogu in tow or facing what wielding the Darksaber truly means for him and his people. Mostly he just wants a nap.

Luke Skywalker is looking for Jedi artifacts he can use to help build a curriculum for the school he seeks to create. Not that he knows where it will be. Or how to find pupils. But then he runs into a shiny stranger whose beskar armor makes him a null space in the Force. And he doesn't know who Luke is.

Intrigued (and in need of parts to repair his ship), he Skywalkers his way into tagging along on the latest bounty.

I LOVED this: it’s very long and plotty dealing with Din becoming Manda’lor, with a great meet-cute to slow burn romance, but mostly this author gets Luke Skywalker in all his dorky-epic glory. Really interesting treatment of Luke’s trauma from his fight with the Emperor and the war generally, and the rare Din/Luke fic that really showcases Leia.

Silver and Copper by Heronfem (Witcher, Geralt/Jaskier)

Geralt is just supposed to pass through the quiet Lettenhove area. He's not anticipating being begged by its people to help save their viscount from a curse that keeps him from daylight. Lord Jaskier, they call him, and he's likely dying.

As Geralt struggles to untangle the ugly web of history that has lead to the increasingly complicated curse, he finds himself spending more and more time with the strange young viscount and wondering just what he might have been before the curse, and who he might be after. But things are not always as they seem, and as the curse tightens its grip on Jaskier, Geralt is forced to face the fear of failing yet another person whose choices were stolen from them.

Very AU, but a gorgeous dark fairytale with a strong backbone of hope and community. Mind the warnings - Jaskier’s father is a definite monster in this.

Exit Strategy by smilebackwards (DCU/Batfamily, gen)

Batman needs a Robin and Batman has a Robin. Tim is just extraneous now, vestigial. He’s a bandage over a healed wound. He doesn’t know what he’s hanging on to.

Or: Tim didn’t expect his exit strategy from the Batfamily to involve quite so much bonding time with Damian over Wayne Enterprises bureaucracy.

*rolls around in the Tim feels* *and the Tim-Damien brotherly feels* Mmm, delicious.

and you can use my skin by unicornpoe (Supernatural, Dean/Cas)

Cas comes back. Dean can’t stop touching him.

This doesn’t break any new ground plotwise for a S15 fixit, but it’s beautifully written: immensely tender and healing and romantic.

Revenge is a Side Dish Best Served With Tea by merakily (The Untamed, Wangxian)

Despite popular opinion, Lan Wangji is actually:
 1. Terrible at diplomacy
 2. Surprisingly vengeful
 3. A master of holding grudges

Five times Lan Wangji gets his petty revenge + one time Wei Wuxian calls him out.

Very fun! Like the summary says, it’s tea-based petty bitch LWJ revenge fluff, with a nice underlying thread of affectionate-and-protective Wangxian.

His Greatest Adversary Yet by architeuthis (original superheroes, slash)

Doctor Nowhere doesn't do the nemesis thing. But the Blue Beacon hasn't been seen in a while, and the more he learns about why, the more it haunts him.

Wonderful mad scientist/superhero piece - Max is such a distinctive and hilarious narrator right from the start, the older-person-figuring-out-they’re-queer feelings are strong, and there’s a lot of deft worldbuilding in the background. [For a little bonus fic-of-fic porn, please enjoy All Along The Watchtower (Or At Least Against The Men's Room Door) by PersianPenName as well, which is very hot and funny.]

May recs

Jun. 23rd, 2021 10:11 pm
spatz: Mr Tumnus and a probe at the lamp post, from this XKCD comic (winter lamppost)

Alright, from my May reading, we've got a selection of recs: 5 Murderbot recs, 4 Untamed, and 3 miscellaneous fandoms (original slash, Supernatural, Wizard of Oz).

MURDERBOT

Demo and Inspection by lick / @indigo

There are a number of things to do, and a number of arguments to be had, before a group can go on a survey trip. Dr. Mensah and Pin-Lee were running out of time to hammer out a deal with the bond company, and the required rental SecUnit had become the sticking point.

Or: Dr. Mensah "meets" Murderbot for the first time.

The first story in an ongoing series following the events of canon from Mensah's POV. The author is SO GOOD at writing Mensah, oh my god, with her compassion and intelligence and carefully stifled fears.

Full Disk Burn by @fallintosanity

While touring the soundstage of one of its favorite serials, Murderbot saves a human from being jumped by thugs. But the human is more than he seems, and Murderbot finds itself entangled in a bigger mess than it had planned.

Immensely fun 'Murderbot gets into trouble because it can't resist helping people, pretends not to care' premise, with a great OC, some nifty worldbuilding around the Corporate Rim media industry, and pitch-perfect bickering with ART.

Not Angry, Just Disappointed by lick

Seth said sternly, “Perihelion, you need to tell us the truth. We can’t leave the home system until we find out what happened. If you’re hiding something—”

Peri cut him off. I am not hiding anything.

Peri might be able to lie astonishingly well to a corporate representative, even impersonate a human over the feed, but it couldn’t lie to Iris. “Yes, you are,” she said.

Great look at how that reveal about "Peri's SecUnit" happened. Iris is also my favorite now as well as obviously being ART's.

In Control by Mayasynth / @bumblebeebats

Four times having a governor module fucking sucked, plus one time [REDACTED: FILE MISSING]. (Or: Murderbot has Emotions for 8,000 words. ART tries to help. So does Dr. Mensah, but like, in a decidedly less assholish way.)

Great/agonizing flashbacks, great/hilarious friendship and boundary negotiations with ART, and a great/emotional punch to the gut.

Threat as Greeting by FlipSpring

I pull close to it in the feed, and say, “You were lucky."

The rogue SecUnit reacts, physically and in the feed. It sits bolt upright, and a wave of fear ripples off of it like a [cloud of micro-debris], or like an [emergency evasive maneuver that grinds a planet’s upper atmosphere]. It’s unpleasant. It’s unfamiliar. I capture the data, store it, and start chewing on it immediately.

ART meets Murderbot, from ART's POV.

This whole series of outsider POVS is fantastic, but this one does some particularly cool things with ART's perspective and the multitasking cranky vastness of its mind.

THE UNTAMED

This was a GREAT month for stories featuring the Untamed ladies. So great that I don’t have any Wangxian recs this month. Yeah, I was surprised too.

Tether by @withbroombefore (gen, minor Wangxian and Yanli/NHS)

It is unexpectedly easy; he does not even need to lie outright, just let them follow his gaze to where Wen Zhuliu's body sprawls on the floor. “They caught me in Yiling,” he says, and holds out one hand to each of them.

Wei Wuxian tells the truth, sort of. AU diverging when Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji find Wei Wuxian in episode 20.

From the description and the first scene, I thought this was going to be a Wei Wuxian story, but it is NOT, it is a fabulous Jiang Yanli story, where she steps up to cover some of WWX's duties and finds her strength. The subtle fallout from that makes for a great alternate universe fix-it.

Zephyrs Blowing Below the Violet by Comfect (gen)

Yú Zǐyuān realizes that Wang Lingjiao's flare, not Wen Zhuliu's hands, are the greatest danger in Lotus Pier, and acts accordingly.

As a result, everything changes, and she eventually realizes that she does, in fact, have three children.

I'm not a fan of Yu Ziyuan in general, but this fic uses some great unreliable narratation and captures all of her flaws and all of her love and all of her badassery and made me like her, dammit. Most characters wouldn't fight a war and come out the other side more emotionally healthy, but honestly it suits her. Fascinating look at how the war might have gone differently with more experienced sect leaders, as well.

chances are by @wildehacked (Wen Qing/Jiang Cheng)

Five bad ideas and one good one.

or: "Please let me help you,” he tells her, sick with guilt and rage that can’t go anywhere.

She laughs wildly. “I don’t need any more of your help, Jiang-zongzhu.”

Brutally good set of five AUs where things went worse for Wen Qing, plus one fix-it.

alright, I think I’ve found the saddest timeline by @tanoraqui

This ficlet is so short and sharp that any summary or excerpt would spoil it, but it's really hard to argue with that description. Oof.

MISC

(original) Follow the River Down by @sassysnowperson

"Am I cancelled?" David asked. He didn't know exactly what it meant to be cancelled, but it seemed like the sort of thing that would come with a lot of notifications.

There was an ugly snort on the other side of the phone. "No, Dad, kinda the opposite," Nicole said patiently. "Jonathan Vane said you were his favorite artist!"

Lovely "Older Little-Known Rock Singer/His Younger #1 Fan who is a Famous Actor" romance. If you don't fall in love with David at his very first dad joke and affectionate banter with his daughter, then you will over his deep kindness and compassion towards Jonathan. Also: very hot. Extra recommended for ex-bandom peeps.

(Supernatural) phone calls and photo albums by @bundibird

Sammy is 18, and off at college. John is 43, and in the wind, chasing whispers. Dean is 22, and alone.

And Adam Milligan is 16, and fighting with his mom, and wants to come and stay with his dad for a while.

Too bad John left his phone with Dean before he fucked off into the sunset.

Fascinating AU. While I would definitely read the 100K epic version of this, it hits the emotional high points and Dean's wounded big brother instincts reactivating despite his shock is always good for me.

(Wizard of Oz) Five Earth Gifts Dorothy Brought Home by ErinPtah

Although Dorothy has lived full-time in Oz for many years (she’s even been promoted to Princess Consort), she pays the occasional visit to America.

And when she returns, she always brings Ozma a fantastical – well, by fairyland standards – souvenir.

*snorts* Come for the talking cat on the Roomba, stay for the adorably married Dorothy/Ozma.

spatz: Tony Stark working on machinery (Tony mechanic)

Managed to post these on Tumblr just under the wire (despite Tumblr's best attempts to eat my post), but I’m a bit late crossposting this month. March started with binge-watching The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty with @inmyriadbits, so there’s ten recs for that, seven for The Untamed, and four miscellaneous (Supernatural, Star Wars, Avatar, and BNHA), all under the cut because I couldn’t be bothered sorting them a second time.

Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty (10) )

The Untamed (7) )Misc: Star Wars, SPN, ATLA, BNHA )

spatz: Austin, TX graffiti of cartoonish alien/frog with caption "Hi How Are You" (Austin hi how are you alien frog)

I was busy watching 18 movies in one week, and then out of town and frequently without internet for another week, so these four fics are literally the only ones I bookmarked in March. Enjoy!

Still Life With Flerken by @copperbadge (Captain Marvel, gen)

Nick Fury: soldier, spy, strategist, cat dad.

Exactly the coda I wanted after the movie!

how to win friends and influence people by Bundibird (MCU, gen)

Someone talks shit about Tony, and, well, Peter isn’t about to let that happen. He doesn’t mean for things to escalate, but in his defense, he’s not the one who threw the first punch. That dubious honor goes to the shaggy-haired kid who apparently takes insults to Mr Stark as well as Peter does, and – well, Peter could hardly let the other boy take on five guys by himself, could he?

In which Peter meets Harley, and Tony shows up to interfere. No one should ever allow *Peter Parker* to be the most sensible person in a group, it’s too hilarious.

And This, Your Living Kiss by opal_bullets (Supernatural, Dean/Cas)

Only a very few people in the world know that the celebrated and reclusive poet Jack Allen is just Kansas mechanic Dean Winchester, a high school dropout with a few bucks to his name. Not that it matters anymore; life has left him so wrung out he never wants to pick up another pen.

Until, that is, a string of coincidences leads Dean to auditing a poetry course with one Dr. Castiel Novak. The professor is wildly intelligent, devastatingly handsome…and just so happens to be academia’s foremost expert on the poetry of Jack Allen.

I know, I know: Dean as a poet?!? Really? But I took a chance on this and it not only works as an AU, it’s a gorgeous story about grief and love and inspiration and all their tricky intertwinings, with a soupçon of identity porn to satisfy my tropey ass.

The Salt and Pie Guys by robotsnchicks (Supernatural, Dean/Cas)

Some overnight shifts at S-Mart are more interesting than others. Tara won’t be forgetting tonight’s shift anytime soon.

I love a good outsider POV, especially in this fandom, and this one is just… *chef kiss* So spot-on in all ways.
spatz: Capable from behind peering over the edge of the Rig, silhouetted against the sunset sky (MMFR Capable back)

Men Do Not Sham Convulsion by sour_idealist (Brick, Brendan/Laura)

Sometimes these things happen, in a few hours in someone else’s bedroom when everyone’s on the edge of cracking - or maybe cracked already - and stupid impulses take over. None of it really matters.

Missing scene from the movie and viciously insightful Laura character study.

to finish the thaw by addandsubtract (Brick, Brendan/Brain preslash)

When Brain regains consciousness, his head is throbbing, and his left eye is swollen shut. His throat tastes like blood. His first thought is, I guess this is what it feels like to be Brendan, and he almost laughs.

Post-series story where Brain is in college and Brendan shows up like a stray cat, and then Brain gets in some trouble. There’s a lot left delicately unsaid in just the right way.

my crown is called contentment by @fahye (Any Old Diamonds, Jerry/Alec)

The oval-cut diamonds were obscenely large, hypnotically bright, calling up a delicious mixture of guilt and wonder and covetousness and unease that Alec kept sipping at like a man unaccustomed to strong spirits.

In which fayhe (our hero) fulfills Jerry’s promise about fucking Alec in nothing but diamonds. An Important and Necessary Coda to the book. :D

The Distant Sky by fallintosanity (Supernatural/Books of the Raksura, gen)

Moon is supposed to be avoiding Consolation, but a mishap during a visit to Opal Night puts Consolation in danger. Moon and Malachite have to navigate a city stranger than anything either of them have ever seen to rescue her.

Sam and Dean, newly reunited after Dean’s miraculous return from Purgatory, investigate reports of mysterious disapperances and cattle theft near Cleveland. But the case turns out to be far more complex than they thought when an enemy they believed dead resurfaces, and they must ally with strange and dangerous creatures to protect all of Cleveland from their common enemy.

A wonderfully old-school portal crossover! Great characterization for both the Winchesters and the Raksura, some excellent action sequences, and lots of fun watching the Raksura be largely unfazed by ending up in another universe. Many bonus points for writing a genuinely terrifying but layered Malachite.

Four Days by @mumblingsage (Mad Max, Max/Furiosa)

There are things you stop wanting after the end of the world. Wanting is vulnerability, and Max can’t afford to be vulnerable out in the Wasteland. But when he returns to the Citadel, he has a lot to revisit. Even if admitting what he wants might break him.

I couldn’t believe I hadn’t read this before, because it’s so excellent? And probably everyone has already read it, but it was a WIP for several years, now complete. Max ends up at the Citadel for four days while his car is repaired, and the author absolutely nailed the slow-build nearly-wordless relationship between Max and Furiosa, as well as some great post-movie worldbuilding and Max’s relationships with the four sisters.
spatz: baby Temeraire cozied up in a hammock (Temeraire in hammock full)

Fables of the Reconstruction by Mugatu (Walking Dead, Daryl/Jesus)

It’s more than two years after the end of the world and six months after the war with the Saviors when Daryl Dixon returns to Alexandria.

AU from juuust after I stopped watching in S6, thus avoiding Certain Bullshit. This author has an A+ Daryl POV, and uses her non-linear structure well to shift between the past slow burn character stuff and the tension of the current-time search & rescue.

Missing Pieces by flailinginlove (Naruto, Kakashi/Iruka)

Shinobi Enforcement Agency is the only bounty station (un)officially recognized by all of the Five Great Nations. It’d be the best place to bring in targets, if only there wasn’t so much paperwork involved.

When they don’t seem interested in taking out the new missing-nin in town, Kakashi wants to know why.

(Or, the one where both Kakashi and Iruka are missing-nin bounty hunters who go after the same target.)

Cheerfully fun AU heavy on the humor and competence porn.

No Reservations: Narnia by Edonohana (Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations RPF, gen)

I’m crammed into a burrow so small that my knees are up around my ears and the boom mike keeps slamming into my head, inhaling the potent scent of toffee-apple brandy and trying to drink a talking mouse under the table. But is it really the boom mike that’s making my head pound? I know for sure that my camera man doesn’t usually have two heads. I have to face facts. The mouse is winning.

I finally read this after seeing it recced approximately everywhere, and holy shit did it deserve all of those recs. If the prospect of Anthony Bourdain getting into a drinking contest with Reepicheep doesn’t immediately snag you…idk, I can’t help you. A vivid, funny love letter to both Narnia and food, accessible even without knowing Bourdain’s work.

My Love Should Be Heard and Not Seen by lurknomoar (Welcome to Night Vale, Cecil/Carlos)

Cecil Palmer is the best phone sex operator in the small company called Night Vale. One night, a slightly tipsy and very lonely scientist dials his number, and gets far more than he bargained for - a late night conversation about advanced biochemistry, a brand new fetish for surreal horror, a surprisingly reasonable internship program, some newts, and slowly, strangely, the love of his life.

Yes, I am also amused that I read two separate awesome phone sex AUs in one month. This one is sublimely weird and funny and sweetly romantic, as is right and proper for WTNV.

Tall Grass by aeli_kindara (Supernatural, Dean/Cas)

“I think we should have a garden,” Cas says.

Dean looks up from his beer. He hasn’t had that much to drink, but Cas still has a vague look of unreality about him, a splash of living color that doesn’t fit in the bunker’s echoing stillness. Dean didn’t hear him coming. A lot of the time, Cas is so unobtrusive it feels like Dean has the bunker to himself, with Sam away.

Dean shakes his head to clear it. “A — garden?” he repeats.

Man, this was such a great read but I’m not sure how to synopsize it? There’s a lush, warm, slow burn romance, domesticity a la Winchesters, road trip casefiles featuring various awesome ladies from the show, and a haunted plant! Highly recommended.

Follow the Heartlines by fakexpearls (Captive Prince, Damen/Laurent)

Apologies, Exalted. What I meant – ”

“What you meant is that you don’t know why I can’t remember anything since His Majesty flayed my back and had me dressed in gold paint and slave’s garb to serve him. But he was a prince then. And a king now.”

Laurent tried to hide his flinch at the words, at his own memories. He looked away to the marble floor.

Damianos continued: “You say that was four years ago. In that time, I seem to have aligned myself with him in country and in marriage. And no one tried to stop me.”

Look, the author had me at their note “An amnesia AU (with political intrigue)” and the story is pretty much exactly what you’d expect from that trope set (pining for someone you’re technically married to! trust issues! politics and competence porn!) but very well executed. I loved her character work for Laurent and how you can read a lot of how their marriage has been by how he keeps stumbling what isn’t there anymore. Right in the feels.

As a grease monkey turned college freshman, Dean's constantly three seconds away from being stressed out of his mind. It hardly helps that he's finally figuring out his sexuality in his thirties.

What might help with that stress is a little phone number (and a big credit card bill). If he can't figure out how to be bisexual in person, he can at least give it a go over the phone, right?

I attended a massage workshop today, and as usual came out all bouncy but relaxed and full of knowledge and ready to DO STUFF -- and then got hit by a wave of exhaustion after barely finishing the dishes. But at least I have new skillz and clean dishes now!

Since it's now officially summer, irony tells me that I've procrastinated enough to dump some spring cleaning here.

First off, anyone want an AO3 invite? I thought I'd sent all of mine out, but I have another. First come, first serve.

Secondly, I cleaned some monstrously dusty plot bunnies out of my WIP folder, so it's time for a little amnesty:

1.) Twenty imaginary dollars to whoever can guess the source of my subject quote! The ladies who saw it with me tonight are not allowed to play, sorry.

2.) What is with the sudden spate of people watching The Mentalist? It's totally bizarre, and I blame [livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits ;) I've seen a few eps with her, since she keeps stealing my laptop before I wake up to watch, and the best part of each has been Cho totally pwning someone with his magical powers of deadpan. And his arms. (Preferably both at the same time.)

3.) Supernatural continues to stealthily gnaw at my brain. I wrote a coda for 5x22, but I'm still blocked on two parts, which is driving me mad. I'll probably just post in frustration soon. My last day of work was Friday (yay!) and I slept in on Saturday morning. I have a tendency to doze after I wake up, and my brain comes up with the *weirdest* shit in that state. Which, naturally, I feel compelled to tell Livejournal. ;)

I'm waiting for Lindsey to get out of the bath so we can watch SPN 5x18, so I'm posting my thoughts about 5x11 through 5x15, which we marathoned Tuesday night. Apparently I had a lot to ramble about, and the squee-to-critique ratio is all over the chart. Castiel episodes do have a higher degree of squee, since my affection for him is *off* the chart. ;)

5x16-18 will follow when I write them. Probably tomorrow.

OMG LINDSEY HURRY UP. (Can you guess which character I am channeling in my icon right now? *g*)
spatz: sparrow perched on a branch (Life title sun)
I don't develop "personal canon" the way I've seen many writers do - all the little details like favorite color, first kiss, number of pets, etc., that are interesting and fun but never come to light. I usually start with core principles and canon details and go from there, reinventing the personal details to suit my purposes (for fic or meta or whatever).

But there's an exception: character sexuality.

When I develop an opinion about a character's sexuality, I will stick to it. I supposed a dramatic event in canon could theoretically change my mind, but it hasn't happened yet. It's weirdly opposite to my approach in real life, where I usually don't try to figure people out unless I'm deciding if I want to flirt with them. For many characters, I don't have a *conscious* idea of their orientation, but odds are I can give you an answer if you give me 30 seconds to consider it. For some, I've got very strong opinions.

Take Charlie Crews, for example. My fanon evaluation of him: straight. I used to read (and still enjoy) Charlie/Ted, but by the end of S1 I was convinced that Charlie just *loves* women, platonically and romantically. Any homosexual activity in his past was situational (i.e., prison) [and possibly not consensual], and while he's not going to have a freak out about it, he's not going to seek out male partners now that he's free.

On the other hand, Dean Winchester = bisexual, though he skews way more to the hetero end of the spectrum. I've considered him bi since well before Castiel ever showed his pretty face. If he wants to get laid, he'll usually pick up a woman, but sometimes he goes for guys - like the difference between craving a bacon cheeseburger and a double decker. Dean may be the type of guy who's very concerned with the trappings of masculinity, but I figure sex is sex is sex to him. (Falling in love, though -- that's a whole different barrel of monkeys, regardless of gender.)

Emily Prentiss: prefers women. I don't have much evidence for my opinion, and I don't think she's been in many relationships (if any) because repression thy name is Emily, but it's very clear in my mind. Hotch and Reid are both firmly heterosexual, though Reid doubtless knows reams of studies about sexuality and would be suprised-but-chill if he were ever attracted to a man.

Neal Caffrey: so very bisexual. He has strong tendencies towards clever people and committed-but-open relationships - the 'open' part being a necessary condition of his profession, where being able to seduce anyone is an advantage. If he met any aliens, he'd definitely pull a Jack Harkness and give it a try, and he's cool with polyamory.

Parker: bisexual. Obviously not shy about her sexuality, considering she hit on Nate's ex-wife in front of him, though she's as unlikely to talk about it as give away money.

Sherlock Holmes: nearly asexual, a state reinforced by his (self)conscious pursuit of logic, but he's got a weakness for people who admire him and who he considers an equal. However, in such rare events, he would only start a relationship with someone he trusts (*cough*Watson*cough*), and then only after overcoming his own self-imposed "love is a danger to logic" principles. After jumping all those hurdles, a metropolitan student of humanity like Holmes is not going to be concerned with something minor like gender.

Do any of y'all have this sort of personal canon? Want to test my opinions by throwing characters at me, or just argue with me about one of the above characters? Bring it!

Luckily, I have some shiny new shows to distract me, like Castle (fun and fannish-friendly), and [livejournal.com profile] junebug_waltz just got me hooked on Greek (adoooorable), and I'm having an Avatar: The Last Airbender renaissance after getting my mom hooked. More on that later.
