spatz: Dean and Cas standing on a lake dock, making eyes at each other (SPN Dean-Cas lake)

All Nine Worlds fic this month, mostly canon-divergence AUs, presented in alphabetical order because why not:

Backslide by Owlwinter

After eight hundred glorious years of working together, his Radiancy is rather distressed at the news of his secretary’s probable death.

Or: in which a certain landslide happens far earlier than in canon.

In which the Emperor has a very badass planetary mage reaction to Kip being presumed dead.

dancing like we did last night by Ariaste

“I love you, and I’m forming a committee about it.”
Fitzroy spluttered on a laugh. “A committee? And what is the purpose of this committee, my Lord Mdang? I believe it has to be, what, two sentences or less?”
“The purpose is to love you.”
“Ah, truly poetic simplicity,”

-

Cliopher gets his shit together, weaponizes parliamentary procedure in his own brain, and finally does some self-examination and clear communication. Fitzroy is just happy to be here.

This one's been recced all over for good reason! Adorable premise, fantastic execution, wonderfully romantic and thoughtful look at the ins and out of being a sex-positive asexual in a relationship.

diving for a flame pearl by ariex09

It took me an appalling three hours and thirteen minutes to even realize that Kip was gone.

Ah, but that was too charitable. Once we had a timeline together, we discovered that Franzel had seen Kip last, turning in for bed at twelve minutes before midnight, and it was not until Shoänie went to wake him at dawn that anyone knew he was anything but asleep in bed. This meant that by the time the knock on my study door came, shortly past the third hour of the morning, Kip could already have been missing for more than nine hours.

In which Cliopher goes missing midway through The Hands of the Emperor. Fortunately, he has friends and family willing to do whatever it takes to bring him home.

So many fanoa feelings, a marvelous adventure, and an always-excellent Ludvic.

Friday Keeps Coming Next by rattyjol

Cliopher's first morning with the Sun-on-Earth was everything he could have dreamed of, until it wasn’t.

or: Cliopher and his Radiancy break time. Again.

Delightful and epic time loop fic kicking off after their first meeting.

Saving Fitzroy by kerithwyn

Sardeet gets arrested.

AU where Sardeet actually makes it to the Emperor, and handles things in her inimitable Sardeet way. My heart grew three sizes, I swear.

We’ll Make It Right For You by Owlwinter

You turn to look at Cliopher in absolute, utter betrayal. Cliopher discovered that you have daughters - daughters! – and brought them to the Palace!? Here, the name Damara would smother any child of yours with taboo and tradition, any ounce of freedom stripped painfully away-

“While away, I encountered these two girls, named Circe and Aurelia,” Cliopher tells you, steady as the rock on which the world has always turned. “With your permission, my lord, I will adopt them myself, and raise them as my daughters here in the Palace of Stars.”

Or: in which rumors reach the Lord Chancellor of two teenage girls with golden lion eyes.

Never thought I'd want kidfic in this fandom, but it's immensely charming, and I loved seeing the ways their relationship did and did not change with the added co-parenting. (why are they LIKE this?!)

spatz: Mr Tumnus and a probe at the lamp post, from this XKCD comic (winter lamppost)
Dear Yuletide Author,

My favorite time of year has come, and I'm so happy you're writing one of these beloved fandoms for me! If you'd like more information about my tastes, extensive squeeing about the fandoms/characters, and/or specific prompts, please continue below. If that sort of thing doesn't inspire you, please just know that my Do Not Wants are incest, amputation/maiming, main character death, daddy/mommy kink, & ageplay.

Go forth and write with my best wishes!

To anyone wandering by looking to write treats - I am delighted by them and have my AO3 settings set to accept gifts. \o/

General Likes & Dislikes (including DNWs) )

Fandoms: Bodies, Nine Worlds, Goblin Emperor, Temeraire )
spatz: (beach scarf)

I got back in Nine Worlds fandom last month leading up to (and during) my vacation (there is a VERY IMPORTANT vacation in canon, and it's cozy to reread, so it was a great choice), so have some recs! I'm only doing in-depth recs for three stories, more are here.

two days five hours by ariex09

Jullanar didn’t realize anything was wrong until the newspaper boy yelped in panic, until she was turning back to see the paper Fitzroy was holding on fire, a conflagration held in one hand, his eyes liquid gold with magic and his voice perfectly empty when he said, “No. That can’t be right. There’s been a mistake.”

In which an adventure in progress is thoroughly derailed by news of the presumed death of the Viceroy of Zunidh.

Delicious presumed-dead AU for the landslide in ATFOTS.

A Most Restful Vacation by Quasar

Jemis is invited to attend the investiture of the Viceroy of Zunidh, which promises to be a delightful trip with Almost No Adventures along the way.

So I actually haven't finished the Greenwing & Dart series, but I'm thoroughly spoiled so I went ahead and read this charming AU where Jemis goes to Zunidh and has some Adventures despite best intentions (truly his chaos field is only surpassed by Fitzroy's, bless his heart). Also some Jemis/Perry pining, for a treat.

Under Compulsion by @philomytha (Biggles, gen)

Von Stalhein is forced to accept his orders.

In which Erich subverts being forced into assassinating Biggles in a twisty way, and Biggles responds in his own inimitable style. Just wonderful all around.

July recs

spatz: Lan Wangji sitting on a bed next to injured Wei Wuxian (Untamed Wangxian bed)

Going out of town soon, so here's just a short list of my top three reads from last month:

cookin' up a storm, piece of cake (The Untamed) - charming modern cooking blog AU, told in epistolary style as Lan Wangji grinds his teeth into dust over his idiotic commenters (and one in particular who you can guess, hah).

The Virtue of Being True (Nine Worlds) - in which a spell backfires off Kip's magical protections and makes everyone AROUND him tell the truth. Hilarious, chaotic, fun inversion of the premise, and very soft in the end.

Lord of Misrule (Lord Peter) - in which Peter takes care of Bunter for once, after he's hurt helping a friend. Peter/Bunter is a hard ship to get right for me, to walk the line of their dynamic, but this one is so so good at it.

spatz: frost covered red leaves on frozen grass (frost leaves)
Happy Yuletide, everyone!

My anonymous author wrote me Debris From Ancient Ruins, a fic for The Mummy about Ardeth during WWII. I was delighted they took up my prompt of Ardeth vs Nazis! Though it's more complex and bittersweet than my flippant prompt, dealing with changing times and the losses of the Medjai.

I haven't read a ton of fic yet, but two of the longer fics I've read turned out to be my favorites:

The Lost of Winter (Goblin Emperor, 20K) - in which a lost mongoose at the Vermilion Opera leads Thara and Tomasaran into a very true-to-canon casefile. With gorgeous writing and character voices, this feels like a little canon novella slipped in right after The Grief of Stones.

a key that winds through secret wards (Nine Worlds, 12K) - in the aftermath of the Emerald Conspiracy, Cliopher has to prove his innocence by magically sharing memories with His Radiancy. Great premise with lots of THEM feels.
spatz: (beach scarf)

*squeezes in at the last minute* Don't mind me, November was terribly busy and also I sprained my ankle - but here's some recs from before all that!

Galagar Gallivant
by Quasar (Nine Worlds, genish)

His Radiancy devises a way to fix an anomaly in time. No priest-wizards were severely harmed in the making of this fic.

Completely delightful pre-canon romp, featuring HR being whimsical in response to magical weirdness, Kip being oblivious but also trusting HR to the nth degree (*heartclutch*), and just general charming shenanigans.

A Contract's a Contract, No Matter How Small by @PenAndInkPrincess (Witcher, genish)

Unexpected side effect of Jaskier praising witchers far and wide: children making the logical jump that witchers can handle ALL monsters. Including such subspecies as the under-the-bed variety.
And, well, what are you supposed to say to a child who asks you to fight a monster for them?

Technically this is a WIP, but the chapters are pretty standalone and SO CUTE.

A Dangerous Game by @fabula-unica (DCU, Bruce/Hal)

"You know what I think," Jordan said. "I think you’re one of those people who think they can’t be pranked. That’s what I think.”
“Jordan. There is no conceivable universe in which you could ever successfully prank me – not in your wildest, most attention-deficit-disordered imaginings is that a thing that could possibly occur.”
Jordan gave a quiet laugh. “You wanna bet?”

I am weak for prank wars and this is an excellent one!

The Long Con by @acornsontheground (DCU, Bruce/Hal)

Hal is adamant that he's not going to spend Bruce's money. Bruce intends to change his mind about that. (A sort-of 5+1 fic)

*facepalm* Bruce why are you like this. But at least he's using his powers for good? Very domestic and funny.

Duty of Care by allonym (Harry Potter, gen)

Megwin is two-thirds done with roll call when she stumbles over a familiar name. Harry Potter. Strange coincidence. There’s a student in her muggle primary classroom with the same name as The-Boy-Who-Lived?
A canon-divergent AU in which Somebody Helps Harry Potter.

Creative and satisfying, though it does take Dumbledore's puppeteer tendencies to the worst conclusion, so maybe don't read if you're a Dumbledore stan.

If It's Me You Need To Turn To, We'll Get By by Linxcat (The Untamed, gen)

Zixuan would like to be closer with his half-brother. He would like to skip all the awkward fumbly beginning bit where they don't know each other and just magically arrive at fraternal harmony, where they can joke around like the Jiangs and look out for each other like the Nies and have that spooky synchronicity like the Lans, but the truth is that he's never had a sibling, and he has no script or example for what you're meant to do when you discover one as an adult. They don't have years of in-jokes and growing pains to fall back on, they're basically just strangers who happen to share a parent.
the sickfic fixit in which JGY discovers the Mortifying Ordeal Of Being Known and Zixuan discovers the Mortifying Ordeal of Getting To Know Other People

Really great characterization, and I like how narrow of an escape the last scene is - JGY's damage goes very deep and I like how this author gets that.

spatz: red leaves hanging in foreground with out-of-focus lights in the distance (fall lights in the distance)

Get in, bitches, we've got small fandoms this month! Murderbot, Nine Worlds, and KJ Charles' Band Sinister for your reading pleasure. It just got cold here, so curl up with a hot drink and enjoy!

[note: the last Nine Worlds rec has SPOILERS for At the Feet of the Sun, so don't read it yet inmyriadbits! I stuck it down at the bottom so they're more avoidable.]

After Hacking
by gamebird (Murderbot, gen)

Murderbot is not paid enough to deal with this shit. (It's not paid at all, which is definitely not enough.)

Series of short works at the period between Murderbot hacking its governor module and the first book. Varying quality, but a great look at its developing personality and sneaky skillset, and a number of sharp, painful dilemmas of the 'do I help and maybe blow my cover or do I let this shitty corporate thing happen' variety.

The mysteries of a marriage by scintilla10 (Band Sinister, David/Amanda)

Five times David consulted in a medical capacity on Amanda's gothic novels.

Adorable look at their marriage.

Variations on George Penn by beautifulduckweed (Band Sinister, George/Ned)

George Penn and Ned Caulfield: their lives and love viewed through a glass, darkly.

Lovely glimpse of a background couple from the book, with excellent use of outsider POV by way of fake excerpts.

Emerald Truth, Three Ways by toffeecape (Nine Worlds, Fitzroy/Kip)

Three ways truth serum could have been deployed during the Emerald Conspiracy case.

Very fun trifecta of scenes, and a mix of funny, tropey, canon-typical pining, and competence. Delicious!

Tell me what your heart's been through by alfgifu (Nine Worlds, Fitzroy/Kip)

The spear butt struck the side of his face, knocking him to the smooth marble floor. He was tired enough to lie there, gasping, until one of the guards hooked their hand into the loop of his arms where they were bound behind him, and hauled him back to his knees.

“We will try that again,” said his interrogator. The man was wearing the full panoply of the Imperial guard and an incongruously friendly smile. “What is your name, barbarian?”

Truth serum AND time travel AND hurt/comfort AND Kip being a fucking badass AND fanoa feels to the max! I adored this.

spatz: sparrow perched on a branch (Default)

Okay, I've got a handful of miscellaneous recs, and then ten recs for Victoria Goddard's Nine Worlds series, which I'm putting under a cut because at least two of you I know are still reading and the recs are full of spoilers for At the Feet of the Sun. Enjoy!

MISC

The Long Way Home by itsnatalie (DCU, gen)

With Jason tentatively back in the Batfamily, things are going pretty well for him--except for the whole thing with Tim. But who gives a shit about Tim Drake?

But when Jason and Tim are pulled into a frightening race for their lives inside a labyrinth that's out to kill them, they may have to look past their differences just to stay alive. Maybe along the way, they'll discover they aren't as different as they thought, and family comes in many different forms.

Spectacular in every aspect: the horror, the action, the hurt/comfort, the brotherly devotion underlying their swarm of issues, and the ending. I really can't rec this one highly enough.

Late Night, North Station by raitala (Untamed, Wangxian)

Lan Zhan finds A-Yuan lost in the railway station. He maybe finds more than he bargained for. Some mornings you leave for the office and come back with a son (and possibly a husband too).

Sooooo sweet, with a lovely autistic LWJ POV. The sequel is still a WIP but is great so far.

Beginning at the End by WerewolvesAreReal (Temeraire, Granby/Little)

In many ways it seems that John's life revolves around William Laurence.

Lovely character study trilogy with Granby sorting out his unrequited thing for Laurence and his ongoing thing with Little.

thou, who art victory and law by The_Apocryphal_One (Goblin Emperor, Csethiro/Maia)

He couldn’t help his unintelligence, any more than she could help her father. And he was kind. She should try to remember that.

(Or: Csethiro Ceredin goes into her betrothal to Emperor Edrehasivar VII with assumptions, and has every one of them challenged.)

Great Csethiro POV as she works through her pride and preconceptions.

plus ten Nine Worlds fics (spoilers!) )
