recs meme

spatz: cartoon bunnies on stilts with caption "dramatic character-driven stories... or stilts?" (Bunnies stories or stilts?)
I'm still on hiatus from monthly recs, but I did a handful over on Tumblr in response to an ask game. Check them out!

If anyone here would like to play, here's the list:

1 - Recommend a fic that lives in your brain rent free.
2 - Recommend a fic that is not posted on AO3.
3 - Recommend fic that is less than 5,000 words.
4 - Recommend a fic that is over 50,000 words.
5 - Recommend a gen fic (no pairings).
6 - Recommend a fic that does something cool with format or structure (epistolary, social media, 5 things, non-linear, etc.)
7 - Recommend a fic that uses a trope you love.
8 - Recommend a fic with an interesting premise/concept.
9 - Recommend a fic from a book fandom.
10 - Recommend a fic that is more than 10 years old.
11 - Recommend a fic you think is a hidden gem/deserves more reads.
12 - Recommend a fic that formed or changed your opinion on something (characterization, backstory, relationship, etc.)
13 - Recommend a fic you've re-read multiple times.
14 - Recommend your favorite fic.
15 - Recommend any fic of your choice.

I've technically already done 1, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, and 13, but I'm happy to take repeats. Fandom requests are also welcome, if it's one I share.

AO3 meme yoinked from [personal profile] celli:

1. Most Hits: Learning Curve, MCU, gen + Steve/Natasha
An Avengers h/c fic adding on to a very popular h/c fic by Arsenic, so no surprise there! And I seem to get a lot of re-reads, going by the comments, which I'm sure helps. God knows I read The Goat's Back a million times while writing this....

2. Second Most Kudos: Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fryer, MCU, gen (but pre-Clint/Coulson in my heart)
A meet-cute for Clint and Coulson that I posted right before The Avengers release, so no wonder. Also it's got a good summary!

3. Third Most Comments: Learning Curve again!

4. Fourth Most Bookmarks: Heartsease, Person of Interest, Reese/Finch
Ahhh, my self-indulgent Regency AU that grew a plot on me. I'm still so grateful to inmyriadbits for patiently letting me read it aloud to her when I was worried about getting the Regency verbal patterns right.

5. Fifth Most Words: Chase the sky into the ocean, Books of the Raksura, Jade/Moon
This one took a WIP Big Bang to finish, hence the word count when I'm historically prone to under-writing things, but I'm very fond of this AU. (So much action! It was fun but took forever, I don't know how Martha does it)

6. Fic With Second Fewest Words (That's Not a Drabble): Guidance, Alias/Austin Powers, gen
I'm still fond of this weird little crossover in which Dr. Evil counsels the evil dentist from the Alias pilot.

Other randomness that only works if you have X number of stories and drabbles with which to filter:

7. Seventh Most Common Relationship*: Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe/Mu Nihuang, Nirvana in Fire, 2 works
MCS's character tag is forever a gift, that insane identity-onion man. Also I'm ostensibly a MCS/Jingyan shipper but Nihuang cannot be denied!

*Go to your works --> sort and filter --> include (or exclude) --> relationships

8. Eighth Drabble Posted: alas, I have only written one formal drabble.

9. Ninth Most Common Character*: Thor, MCU, 4 works
Unexpected! I haven't written him as the main or POV character in anything, but he's always part of the team.

*Go to your works --> sort and filter --> include (or exclude) --> characters

10. Tenth Mature and/or Explicit Fic: The Things Underneath Our Hearts, MCU, gen
I just barely have ten fics if I include both explicit and mature, and this was the first mature one! (Probably because of the torture, I don't think Clint and Steve platonically cuddling merits a ratings upgrade.)

11. Eleventh Most Recent Completed Fic When You Exclude Your Ten Most Frequent Fandoms*: branching out, Books of the Raksura, gen
A sweet little post-canon Yuletide story where Chime wakes up to some gender stuff in the colony.

*Go to your works --> sort and filter --> exclude --> fandoms

12. Twelfth Most Recent Story in Your Sixth Most Common Tag*: alas I only have 6 stories on that tag, which is First Meetings.

*Go to your works --> sort and filter --> include --> tags

13. Favorite Title That Isn't from a Poem or Song or Shakespeare or The West Wing: Find Me, Follow Me, Banlieue 13, Leito/Damien
The third and long-delayed smutty conclusion to my B13 trilogy! The whole series is titled with phone tech terms - Crosstalk, Phone Tag, Interference - and Find me/follow me was a delightfully poetic gift of a term when I went scouring through the Wikipedia category, and perfect for the story, in which Leito follows Damien out of a meeting and they finally connect.
spatz: Austin, TX graffiti of cartoonish alien/frog with caption "Hi How Are You" (Austin hi how are you alien frog)
Finally sat down and did this fun little trope-sorting game that has been floating around!

spatz: Joan Watson clutching her head in exasperation (Elementary Joan headache)
A meme, for I am sick and bored with everything.

1. Three ships: first three that came to mind are Tim/Kon, Dean/Cas, and Bruce/Diana. Feeling nostalgic!

2. First ship: Max/Logan from Dark Angel. My teenage ass had ALL the feelings.

3. Last song: Out loud? The Christmas carols I got stuck in my head from Love Actually and sang all the way home from the party Saturday night to keep myself awake, before waking up sick. :(

4. Last film: the collected Max Fleischer Superman shorts, which I had out from the library and watched while folding laundry. Brilliant animation, really before its time, and I enjoyed the documentary extra where Paul Dini and Bruce Timm talked about its influence on B:TAS. However, for all the fun mad scientist episodes and gorgeous pre-noir visuals, there were some appallingly racist episodes that I had to watch on fast forward: mostly Japanese and German caricatures starting after Pearl Harbor, but also some native Africans, and just for funsies, a Native American villain who was ALSO a mad scientist. *facepalm* Lois was unsurprisingly The Damsel on repeat, totally insane reckless (that's pretty canon at least), but she did have a few fun badass moments - my favorite being when she knocks out a train robber and then grabs his machine gun to fire at a chasing car. *chef kiss*

5. Currently reading: nothing new, just old fanfic re-reads. My brain is mush. Though I did finish the newest Murderbot a few days before getting sick! So great.

6. Currently watching: Batman: The Animated Series. Predictable!

7. Currently consuming: Thai delivery. Mmm, tom kha, defeater of clogged sinuses AND delicious.

8. Currently craving: not being sick anymore
spatz: Reese looking at Finch with hand-drawn heart (Reese-Finch hearteyes)
For those of you who remember Date Night, my Person of Interest fic where Reese and Finch accidentally-on-purpose eavesdrop on Carter's date, I posted this little timestamp snippet on Tumblr for an ask from [personal profile] smilebackwards:

John leaned over Harold's shoulder and set the bowl of popcorn down in front of his keyboard. Harold had to angle his elbows out to keep his hands in place: it was a very large bowl, full to the brim of fluffy kernels smelling richly of butter and salt.

He turned as much as his neck would allow to glare at John. "What is that?"read more )

spatz: Dani Reese in profile against a sunlit wall (Life Dani sunlight)
via [personal profile] forestsofpine

Give me a page number (1-201) and I'll give you a fic rec from that page in my bookmarks.

Since I don't actually bookmark on AO3, I'm gonna do this with Pinboard with the display set to 20 works/page to mimic AO3. My bookmarks go back to 2006, so use lower numbers if you want a chance at more recent fandoms!

Since I meant to claim #10 Rec A Fanwork with my usual monthly recs post but forgot, I've decided to smoosh it together with #15 Create Your Own Challenge to make...

Choose Your Own Rec(set)!

Leave a comment with a fandom, trope, or mood and I will rec you at least one fanwork that I think suits you. Feel free to get creative with the mood prompts (maybe not this specific but have fun with it), and you'll get better results from fandoms I know, obviously!
spatz: sparrow perched on a branch (Default)
Challenge #14: In your own space, post your pictures of your fandom scavenger hunt results. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. a fannish item

Rogue One art by [personal profile] pentapus, commissioned by [personal profile] leupagus (and this framed copy was a gift from her as well!)

2. something round

A coaster that [personal profile] inmyriadbits brought me from her trip to Istanbul! So pretty!

3. something that is your favorite color

No one is surprised, it's something green.

4. the last game you played (video, phone, table top, etc.)

I have won every Wordle game I've played except the very first one, which mildly infuriates me every time my stats pop up at the end. I only started playing this month, though.

5. a book you are currently reading

If by 'currently reading' you mean 'lives on my coffee table where I can read a chapter those times when I can't decide what I want to do'. The Parade's Gone By by Kevin Brownlow is a collection of oral history interviews about the early silent era in Hollywood - fun stuff, albeit definite grain-of-salt territory given the age and proclivity of film people to elaborate their stories.

6. album art of the first song that comes up on shuffle

Ahhh, high school nostalgia.

7. the last movie you watched

Finally watched this during a movie night with my mom last week, since I'd been putting it off because I KNEW I was going to cry. (I was right.) Leslie Odom Jr.'s face in this splash is cracking me up, tho.

8. TV show you're currently watching

9-1-1 has been eating my brain, I'm writing fic, send help.

9. the homescreen, lockscreen, or desktop wallpaper from your device

Today's desktop wallpaper! My cycler program tells me this camel was photographed on Socotra Island, Yemen, which Wikipedia informs me has been described as "the most alien-looking place on Earth." Pretty normal looking camel here, but a spectacular sand dune.
spatz: darkfield photograph of a nematode, caption "Unleash the nematodes of war!" (nematodes of war)
Day 1: In your own space, talk about your Happy Place — the thing(s) that gives you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

Physically, my living room is incredibly cozy and soothing. I have a couch -- it's technically a "chair and a half" -- that was promptly dubbed The Nap Couch after on multiple occasions [personal profile] inmyriadbits and I fell asleep on it. I have another massive comfy armchair from my aunt and uncle, and I spend most of my time at home on one of them.

Mentally, stories are always my Happy Place: fic, books, TV and film, comics, all sorts of stuff.

Emotionally, I have a chat with [personal profile] leupagus, [personal profile] inmyriadbits, and a cluster of other fangirls that is funny and lovely and full of awesome, supportive ladies.

I'm gonna leave it at that for today -- I just finished reorganizing all of my closets in a fit of New Year's cleaning, which went surprisingly easily (probably because I moved in just over a year ago) but still was a few hours of shuffling things around. Time for leftover cake and fic!

I'm gonna do it this year! I really am!

And while I'm at it, I think I'll fill out the back half of January with that question meme that's been going around. I am as always late to the party, but I was out of town visiting [personal profile] leupagus when the Tumblr news hit, so I have a decent excuse? Maybe? I have some new people who friended me that I haven't said hello to yet, sorry?

Anyway, give me questions or topics that you'd like to hear me ramble about. My interests list is always a good source of ideas, if you're looking.

Ahem. Continuing the positivity meme:

1) I get a free facial earlier today! I've never had one before; it was nice.

2) Can You Slash Green Eggs and Ham? made me LOL.

3) Today I did my weekly shiatsu session/studying, vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom, organized my closet, did dishes, made meatloaf, and did laundry. My feet kinda hurt, but my virtue level is sky high.
spatz: closeup of Ray's hand revealing detective badge hidden under his jacket, caption "Duty" (Due South RayK badge)
[personal profile] ignipes tagged me for this meme: The rules: during the next five days, post three positive things about your day and ask three people to do the same so the positive attitude can gain some ground.

I meant to do this before midnight, so let's just pretend it's still Tuesday:

1) As I discovered on my way to work. Pumpkin spice lattes are back at Starbucks! I was very well-caffeinated today.

2) I have several clients tell me how they were feeling better from my massages -- long-term, not just the usual staggering out of the room looking blissed out, which is also nice but much more common. Massage is a very rewarding job. :)

3) Watched the second episode of Endeavour with [personal profile] inmyriadbits, which was recced to us by a friend when Lindsey pimped Miss Fisher at her this weekend (said friend has been binge-watching period BBC dramas, apparently). Morse continues to be an endearingly awkward turtle with deadly cheekbones, full of obscure nerdery and occasional indignation that overcomes his quietness -- exactly how I like my detectives. His mentorship by Thursday is so great and gruff, and I could listen to Thursday's lovely resonant voice for ages. Plus, there are massive quantities of Oxford rooftop cinematography porn. I am easy.

Wondering a bit if I should check out Lewis, since I remember that having a tiny fandom recently. Anyone of ya'll watch that?

ETA: whoops, forgot to tag people. Um, [personal profile] inmyriadbits, [personal profile] philomytha, and [personal profile] icepixie!

Another meme, because that's about where my brain is at today: uncreative and headachey, but perversely in the mood for conversation anyway. I think I did this one on Tumblr, actually, but no one responded - which is kinda typical on Tumblr for me.

Z: What's a ship that you want to ship publicly, but everyone on tumblr hates it so you keep your mouth shut about it?

book meme

Aug. 5th, 2014 11:41 pm
spatz: book cracked open over armrest, caption "happiness is" (book happiness)
Meme from [personal profile] ignipes: List ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the "right" or "great" works, just the ones that have touched you.

Like Kali, most of these are from childhood:

Dinotopia by James Gurney: I wanted to live in Dinotopia SO MUCH as a child, I wrote a poem about it in my diary. Literally. And to this day, I love the imagination and adventure and camaraderie of it, the way the island is not really a utopia but actually pretty complex and constantly negotiating old ways and new faces, how science is valued by the protagonists, and the stunning art.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren: Who doesn't want to be Pippi when they don't grow up? Funny, bold, adventurous, and most of all kind, as loyal to her friends as they are to her, even when it involves sailing to the middle of nowhere and fighting off pirates with coconut projectiles.

Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli: I'm still kind of heartstuck on how this book was partly epic and mythologizing, but also quietly realistic about poverty and racism and homelessness and loneliness.

Bridge to Terebithia by Katherine Paterson: Well, this one scarred me for life. I remember being SO MAD at my older sister for giving it to me, because it made me cry so much.

Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers: Still my favorite romance ever, even if it is ostensibly a detective novel. Also makes me want to learn and read and create, which is the highest compliment I can give anything, IMO.

Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede: Formative feminist fairytale remix, plus funny as hell. We literally read our copies until they fell apart, and I still have the taped-up remnants.

Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon: So the end of this trilogy got bafflingly Christ-image-y, but the first two were solid gold in terms of women being flawed yet pragmatically kickass as a career, plus surviving trauma and related h/c.

The Truce at Bakura by Kathy Tyers: Really this is a stand-in for the whole Star Wars Expanded Universe, but it was my first exposure to the idea that the story doesn't have to stop at the end of the movie. Also, there were soul-stealing lizard aliens. Who doesn't like soul-stealing lizard aliens?

The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss: Another book I literally read to pieces as a child, ridiculous ecology and all. Honorable mention to Island of the Blue Dolphins and Hatchet in the category of novels about surviving in the wilderness in isolation -- but I will want a treehouse to live in until the day I die, so SFR won.

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley: Nngh, yes, flawed awesome ladies and their destined but hard-won badassery and their equally kickass and conflicted love interests who can't stop with the hearteyes. These are things I like. Also, magical swords and nearly-magical highly-trained horses. Yes.
spatz: miniseries Alice approaches a vial of red liquid (Alice curiosity killed the cat)
I've seen that movie meme going around:

Anyone who feels like it should post their ten most CRUCIAL CRUCIAL CRUCIAL-ASS movies, like the movies that explain everything about yourselves in your current incarnations (not necessarily your ten favorite movies but the ten movies that you, as a person existing currently, feel would help people get to know you) (they can change later on obviously).

I actually did this on Tumblr first, but on reflection (and since it's no longer 3AM)(just 1AM), I have revised it thusly:

1) The Philadelphia Story
2) District B-13
3) The Shawshank Redemption
4) The Sting
5) Spider-Man 2
6) Trash Dance Aliens
7) Matilda
8) Bull Durham
9) Apollo 13 The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (my go-to rent-this-for-me-when-sick movie at age 6)
10) Anastasia

Technically, if these are supposed to be formative/representative films, this should *also* include the *other* movie I watched a million times when sick as a child -- but for the life of me, I cannot remember the title. I vaguely remember that it was about a fairy who granted those "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight" wishes. She was lonely and overloaded, so she ended up recruiting a team to help her, and then there was something involving a villain who attacked their castle and took the original fairy captive and the team had to rescue her. I wish I remember what it was called, because clearly I imprinted on it with regards to someone being lonely and unloved, teams becoming found families, wish fulfillment, and h/c rescues. And groups of awesome ladies.

In other news, everything is Bucky feels and therefore everything hurts.

If you are looking for a WIP to read for your daily dose of emotional agony, check out Out of the Dead Land, written for the prompt:

Sam and Steve find the Winter Soldier and begin the process of deprogramming him. At first his progress seems to be astounding -- it's like having Bucky back again. But there's little cracks in the facade, and Steve catches on that Winter Soldier doesn't have his memories back. He's just studied up on how to be Bucky. He's memorized facts about the Howling Commandos, their old neighborhood in Brooklyn, even personal details about Steve himself, but it's not *perfect* and it's not truly *Bucky*, it's the Winter Soldier playing at being Bucky. He wants to be Bucky very badly.

SO GOOD. It's gorgeously written Bucky POV, and hitting every 'Bucky is emotionally broken but still uber-competent, yet doesn't know how to handle his Steve love' button that I have. Plus, there's a cool plot that I won't spoil, and her Natasha may be the best Natasha I've found post-movie.

The author-anon says it's two-thirds done, so you could wait, but man, sometimes I just like torturing myself in this fandom.

I needed this comic *last* week, when I had shitty self-esteem writer's block. Oh well. Better late than never.

Kickass former-PI mom helps take down revenge-porn website owner/epic dickbag: a lot of the stories from other victims in this article are horrifying, which makes the ending particularly sweet justice, and it's a very informative read.

Some WIP recs:

Hail Mary by [archiveofourown.org profile] galaxysoup
Mary Winchester is resurrected by a bunch of angels, and ends up on a buddy-hunter roadtrip with recently-human Castiel. GENIUS. Firstly, I never knew I needed this in my life but now I cannot believe there aren't a million Mary-gets-resurrected stories. Secondly, the story so far is hilarious and touching and wonderful, and both Mary and Cas are spot-on. Thirdly, I am enjoying the fuck out of this despite not having watching SPN since S5, though admittedly I have been spoiled in every direction. I highly recommend it.

1796 Broadway by [archiveofourown.org profile] rainproof & [archiveofourown.org profile] teaberryblue
Epistolary Steve/Tony fic, which starts when Steve insists that "all complaints be addressed to him in writing. On paper, the nice old-fashioned way, because the computer screen hurts his eyes" because he's annoyed at Tony. I fucking love politely-bitchy Steve, so I was sold from the start, but the story so far is full of charm and wit and lots of NYC. [archiveofourown.org profile] rainproof writes Tony, [archiveofourown.org profile] teaberryblue writes Steve, and they trade letters back and forth with occasional multimedia bits. I know both of the authors and have been assured that they a) have a plan and b) have written over 100 chapters in advance at this point, so my normal qualms about reading WIPs have been soothed. :) Since the story is deliberately being written as a serial, with a new chapter posted every day, I do recommend reading it that way to avoid epistolary overload.

spatz: Arthur fighting a projection in rotating hallway (Inception antigravity hallway)
Looks like I failed out of doing a Ten in Ten proper, thanks to getting sick this weekend, but I'm hoping to get back on the horse today. We'll see.

Towards that goal, I've been rewatching Person of Interest S2 (my shiny shiny Blu-Ray discs -- I didn't think that Reese could get any prettier but apparently yes), and had forgotten just how many Die Hard references there were in 2x07 Critical. (I think Leon calling Finch 'bubbe' takes the prize, personally.) Dear POI Writers Room: please continue to be enormous film geeks. *pinches their cheeks*

*****

Tomorrow is chock full of fannish goodness:

1) Person of Interest S3 premiere. (I may die!)

2) Agents of SHIELD premiere. (Coulson did not die!)

3) [personal profile] marthawells's Star Wars tie-in starring Leia, Razor's Edge, comes out. (long live Princess Leia!)
The book is set after A New Hope, and promises to have lots of awesome ladies and Alderaanian space pirates. \o/!

*****

And a writing meme, for reasons:

Ask me a question about one of my fics or series. It can be absolutely anything in any project and I will tell you the honest-to-goodness answer (even on the progress/plans for next chapters of current series).

Don't hold back. Whatever you ask, I'll answer as truthfully and as completely as possible. You can also ask about my writing as a whole, if you like.
