Feb. 17th, 2013 02:01 amOkay, someone not me needs to write the crossover where John Reese is John Sheppard's bastard half-brother. Because really.
(This message is brought to you by Reese's delivery of "But that would be telling" from this week's episode,
inmyriadbits being a terrible person who points out things like this, and consequently rereading a bunch of SGA fic. Also, 2AM.)

Nov. 26th, 2012 07:03 pmWhat did writers even do before the internet? I just wrote a 1K scene and had to stop and read up on the following:
cicada song
shot his cuffs
number of countries in the world
Antarctica treaty
sodium pentothal
short-acting
blood loss
I mean, I probably could have gone without, but the banter would have been much more bland.

Nov. 9th, 2012 06:39 pmI love libraries and librarians, but sometimes I just really appreciate the self-checkout machines. I can't imagine what someone would think about my latest haul of books - possibly that I was planning a revenge-flick-style sniper attack on someone who traumatized me, rather than the correct answer (i.e. writing fic about Clint Barton).
Accountability
Oct. 18th, 2012 07:41 pmIncentive for doing dishes after work: it sort of works as hydrotherapy for my forearms and hands on the days I work massage. Mmmm, hot water.
Anyway. In the interests of keeping track of all the WIPs I have and how much I have or have not worked on them, I am leaving this word count listing here for my own reference. ( Please enjoy my working titles for things: )
=59,894 words, most of it written this year, most of *that* since Avengers came out. Plus 13K of posted fic. Not bad!
Aaaand there's older stuff not in Google Docs, but now I'm bored.

DVD commentary meme
Aug. 12th, 2012 09:33 pmFrom...er, many, many people, the DVD commentary meme. I think I finally have enough stories to play, so here goes:
Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.
I'm just going to be here, admiring my shiny new Erskine icon - er, on DW anyway. Sorry, LJ, ya'll don't get snarky wants-your-attention Erskine because I am lazy.

playing catch up
Aug. 12th, 2012 01:59 am*collapses in puddle*
So, I have not been around in a while! Hi! But I have good reasons:
1) Got A Massage Job!
Just started this week, and I'm still working part-time at the old job because my stamina is way down from where it was when I graduated, so I'm giving my poor hands (and abs and quads) time to readjust rather than injuring myself by jumping in full time. I like it so far - it's a commercial massage place, so there's simply not time to be personal and detailed like you can with private work, and I always sucked at the time limits (50 minutes is BARELY enough time to get shit done, for reals, 90 minute sessions are vastly superior), but my coworkers are all very nice so far and Austin-y, so there's plenty of full-sleeve tattoos and spiked hair and such under the uniforms.
2) Started Watching Teen Wolf
I hate you all. Yes, you know who you are. *glares* I finished S1, then stopped so that Lindsey could catch up and we're going to start S2 tomorrow...just in time for the finale. *sigh* But, hey, hiatus fic! I'm in love with Stiles (and Dylan O'Brien, holy shit that kid's face is magical), and have Thoughts About Derek that don't really align with fanon but I'm gonna hold off posting about them until I catch up because I could be wrong. Allison is adorable, Scott is a potato, and I'm less fond of Lydia and Jackson than most of fandom, but still pretty darn fond.
3) Computer Broke
Blue screen of death, couldn't boot into Windows, thankfully managed to boot with a Linux CD and recover everything but had to reinstall Windows. *sigh* I still don't know what happened, but my computer's just past age 3, so it's time to start paranoid backing up shenanigans, apparently. Yay.
3) ALL the Plot Bunnies
In the last couple weeks, I have outlined a multi-part Clint-joins-SHIELD fic (yes, another one, shut up) and wrote most of the first and third parts of that, figured out how to revamp my Natasha-meets-Clint-via-timeloop-shenanigans plot after it got jossed by the movie, and got bitten by a rabid Avengers/Teen Wolf plot bunny because apparently my reaction to low levels of common sense in a canon now is "needs more Coulson". None of which helps me with the ten-odd *other* WIPs on my desktop, but.... Eventually I'll finish something again.

zombie shame
Jun. 26th, 2012 02:43 amI should really stop saying I don't like things, because then I inevitably end up wearing pink, or reading RPF, or writing fic where two characters played by Jeremy Renner are actually the same person. *facepalm*
I don't even LIKE this movie, wtf. I just got pissed that they killed off the only likeable and intelligent character in the movie, and, combined with my firm belief that Coulson would never let a zombie apocalypse happen on his watch, wound up writing fix-it fic.
(Jeremy Renner in tactical gear had absolutely nothing to do with that decison. Noooo.)
...Um, anyone interested in doing a beta? Preferably someone who has seen 28 Weeks Later recently?

Avengers research
Jun. 23rd, 2012 09:17 pmWork is incredibly slow today, so I just spent 6 um, 8 hours amassing a truly huge amount of research and links surrounding The Avengers.
1) Law and the Multiverse
This is a blog that discusses fictional legal issues that might exist in the universe of superheroes and comics: awesome. They put together a number of posts about the movie ( listed here in order of how interesting I found them: )
I have not yet read their article Death and Taxes and Zombies, but I am linking to it for
celli. :D
2) Character Dialogue Analysis
Written by
grey_bard, these are some neat, incisive breakdowns of how various Avengers speak in the movieverse, with relevant quotations:
Natasha Romanoff
Steve Rogers
Bruce Banner
ETA: Clint Barton
I found this *incredibly* helpful for Bruce, personally, but all of them are fantastic. I'm hoping she does everyone, but she's already explicitly said she's *not* doing Tony, so we'll see.
3) Things That Would Surprise Captain America
(link goes to roundup post)
Speaks to my personal pet peeve of OMG PEOPLE, Steve served in the Army and was best friends with Bucky, he is not going to blush when people talk about sex!, but there are tons of interesting historical details contributed in the comments.
( Some thoughts from my own comment on the post )
4) Shiny Movie is Shiny
Avengers art design interview/article
I found all of this interesting, but the Stark Tower and Helicarrier sections are particularly relevant for fic purposes.
VFX Roundup
Okay, a lot of this is special effects technobabble, but there's also dozens of high-res images of various locations and technology (Helicarrier displays and Tony's HUD), plus a discussion of where the battle took place in New York. What we see in the movie takes place in a 4x10 block area around Stark Tower & Grand Central Station. I am also amused at how even the FX people think Joss was awesome.
Gorgeous hi-res images of the Helicarrier displays, Tony's holographics desk, and the Iron Man HUD
The HUD is particularly fascinating to me - the original Iron Man team put a huge amount of thought into how it worked because they are nerds like that, and did multiple versions of the display as Tony evolved the suit. This is a whole new level of detail, and it's a important character note for Tony that he sees and processes all of that information during a fight.
So help me, I think I'm going to do a followup post about Stark Tower's layout and the geography of the Battle of Manhattan because that's not even all of the stuff I have, I just have to close up the office now.

The rules:
1. Go to page 77 (or 7th) of your current ms
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written. No cheating.
From my Avengers fic (almost 10K and therefore longer than any fic I have ever written, and still only maybe 10% done):
“I always miss that about New York when I’m in California,” she said, after an awkward pause. “No matter how many people live here, you always manage to run into someone you know.” She regretted the words instantly - how many people did the Captain even know in the city anymore?
Thankfully, the corner of his mouth turned up a little, changing his smile into something more genuine. “I missed that about New York, too.”
Pepper grinned back, relieved that she hadn’t stuck her foot in her mouth. “I was just heading uptown for a meeting - can I drop you somewhere?"

Feb. 2nd, 2012 09:06 pmToday was a day where my shoes did not match.
( Yes, I mean that literally. )
In my defense, I woke up 5 minutes before I had to leave for work, but yeah. I didn't even notice until the end of my lunch. *facepalm*

Time for the WIP meme! (gacked from
philomytha)
Post a random sentence (or three whole paragraphs) from every WIP you're currently working on, even if it's very short. Then invite people to ask questions about your WIP. With any luck, you'll get talking about writing, and the motivation to take that WIP one step closer to completion will appear as if by magic!
I picked the five I've actually worked on in the past two weeks, since the full list is a bit longer.
( the long MI4 Ethan-Brandt fic I'm co-writing with imyriadbits. (I was so tempted to post the bit with the cheetahs, but that one's hers.) )
( the XMFC Notorious AU, in which no one is a mutant, everyone is fucked up, and I worry about my ability to adequately write hatesex )
( the Star Trek reboot AU where Winona's shuttle got captured by Nero, which has been a WIP since fall 2009 )
( the plotty XMFC one where aliens invade one year post-divorce. This is from the scene where Erik runs into Peggy Carter fighting aliens in NYC. )

attack of the plot bunnies & Nikita S1
Oct. 19th, 2011 01:49 amStories other people should write for me:
1) a White Collar version of Chicago's Most Wanted wherein Neal... or no, wait. Wherein Peter gets amnesia while undercover and runs off to be a criminal mastermind! I want this like burning, people.
2) indulgent NCIS LA AU where Hetty adopted Callen as a child, and he turned out basically the same but much more competent.
3) Nikita and Phil Coulson are locked in a cell together and have to escape. Much dryly sarcastic ass-kicking ensues. (PROOF that this would be fucking awesome)
Which reminds me!
( thoughts about the end of Nikita S1, before I start S2 )
Now I just have to find time to sit down with
inmyriadbits and catch up on the newest four eps. *sigh* Hopefully by Friday, so I can watch Nikita and Fringe live. Back-to-back kickass ladies! \o/!

XMFC question
Aug. 24th, 2011 08:47 pmThe guy on the left is Darwin and the guy on the right is Einstein, obviously, but can anyone identify the woman in the middle picture? She looks familiar - an actress, or a singer?
ETA: found it! The woman is Rita Hayworth. Thanks, ya'll!

(These are the pictures on Charles' bedside table in 1944 when he meets Raven, for those who want context. The only other objects I can identify are the baseball, a book, and a chess piece that looks like a king.)

Meme from
dira: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous.
For the record, my WIP folder is called "ficlets", possibly because it sounds less intimidating that way. You can generally tell the status of things by whether they have progressed from Notepad to OpenOffice.
( in order by most recently modified )
I did not realize I had that many. A lot of these are within shouting distance of being done, too.... *winces*

May is not very gay
May. 8th, 2009 01:03 pmI have been hiding from real life by reading massive quantities of Magnificent Seven fic. Some of it was deeply, deeply bad, but I cannot stop myself.
However, I have a compelling list of reasons for hiding.
1) On Wednesday, a student at my school was shot and killed at her job in the campus bookstore. The shooter was at large until late last night, and the campus was on lockdown because they thought he might go after more Wesleyan students. I didn't know her, and I really don't know how I feel right now - it's still so surreal. I've barely left the house for a week.
2) I have three papers left to write. One is days late, and the other two are due on Monday. I have not written a single page. I am soooo fucked, and I'm having trouble caring.
3) I am graduating from college. My only current solid plan is going to the Bahamas for two weeks in June.
Some things that have made me smile recently:
1) Ryan Ross playing with animal horns (not like that!) and Brendon Urie quoting 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
2) Maine legalizing same-sex marriage. If New Hampshire joins, we'll have New England almost covered. Let's hope it spreads, like a zombie plague of awesome.
3) The shenanigans over at XKCD. I am frequently irked at how media and fiction portray fans as crazy in a bad way; Randall Munroe is one of us, and pokes fun at Firefly/general fandom in a way that neatly avoids any irkage on my part. Plus, there's a perfect dig at FOX, which I ALWAYS love.
4) Picturing the ATF-verse Mag7 meeting the Leverage gang. I mean, aside from imagining Ezra and Sophie's delightful verbal duels when they meet undercover, or how badly Parker would scare Buck, I like to picture Vin and Eliot in the same room, and all the separated-at-birth jokes that might follow.

Beta Appreciation Day
Oct. 13th, 2004 11:39 pmI have no betas yet, but I wish to thank all of you who are betas. Without you, we would be plagued by grammatical errors, unfinished stories, unenthusiastic writers, writers with inflated egos *g*, and a general fanfic malaise. So thank you, unknown betas, for being the fabulous silent supporters of writing that you are.
