spatz: Atlantis in B&W, sihouetted against the sky (SGA city b&w)
[crossposted from [community profile] wipbigbang]

Story Title: Chase the sky into the ocean
Fandom: Books of the Raksura
Author: [personal profile] spatz / cactusspatz
Link: AO3
Summary: Moon eyed the calm, murky surface of the water, trying to decide why he felt like something was going to eat him.
Warnings: canon-typical violence
Characters: Moon, Delin, Jade, Stone
Pairings: Moon/Jade
When I Started: The 2017 solar eclipse! I went camping by a lake, which sparked the story for reasons that will become obvious.
How I Lost My Shit: I handwrote the whole opening while camping, lost the pages for a while, found and typed them up eventually, vaguely plotted out the rest of the story, and it has sat unfinished in my WIPs folder ever since.
How I Finished My Shit: The structure of having a deadline and the lure of getting shiny fanart! Jillyfae did a fantastic job with the latter part (art AND a fanmix!!!), and has been excited and lovely and encouraging since the beginning of our collaboration.

Bragging Rights: I've always been a huge fan of the Books of the Raksura (and Martha Wells' entire backlist tbqh) but I've never actually tried creating anything for them, so when I saw a blurb about Moon for the WIP Big Bang I got ridiculously excited. It was an excellent decision, the fic is gorgeous, and Moon is, in turns, deeply confused and exasperated and very good at fighting things without quite dying himself, which is exactly how I like him. I had a wonderful time looping music over and over until I hated everything and then loved it again, which is pretty much the only way I've ever managed to make a playlist. And then I even found a picture of the perfect horrifyingly purple plant for the fanmix cover! It felt kind of like fate. (Or possibly my image searching skills have improved over the years? Both are possible.) 12/10, great author, great Bang, definitely recommend.

I wrote Books of the Raksura fic for Nestra, featuring confused but curious Chime and teenaged Thorn and gender norms.

Books of the Raksura
gen, Chime & Thorn

“I want to go on the trip to see the Hassi,” Thorn said.

I was gifted a completely darling and hilarious Temeraire fic by brutti_ma_buoni, First Blood, in which Lady Allandale and Jane Roland plan a society event, and Laurence's poor mother is appalled and steely in turns, just like her son.

...also I am horrified/ashamed to realize that I didn't crosspost ANY of my 2017 fic over here? *facepalm* Starting with LAST year's Yuletide fic.

Temeraire
gen, post-canon, Tharkay & Lady Allandale

When her son returns from breakfasting in town and tells her that he plans to move to Scotland to stay with his friend Mr. Tharkay, and that Temeraire will be taking one of the new seats in Parliament, Diana says only, “Well, dear, you must bring Mr. Tharkay to tea, then. Tomorrow?”

Voltron: Legendary Defender
university AU, PWP, Shiro/Allura

Shiro wasn’t really sure how he’d gotten here, exactly, with a student sitting on his desk with her foot in his lap, but he does know he needs to figure it out in a hurry, or things are going to happen that he can’t ever take back.

(obviously this has been grossly jossed in the meantime)

The first time it rained after Rey came to Ahch-To, the raindrops came down so suddenly and so heavily that she thought something had gone terribly wrong.
