I just went to see Return of the King for the second time.

This was Sam's movie. We always knew that Aragorn would come to the throne, and we knew that there would be great battles, and we knew that the Ring would be destroyed, if only by our keenly honed fantasy instincts *g* But we didn't know the cost, or the struggle. Sam was Frodo's hope and practicality. All the time Frodo was being changed by the Ring, all the times he despaired or fell, Sam was there to pick him up, to tell him, "Let's just make it down the hill, and we'll see," and to remind him of the Shire and his reason for coming so far.

I won't jump into the whole slash argument; suffice to say, they loved each other, understood each other best, and that more than enough for me.

I noticed that they showed a lot more of Middle Earth in the background of scenes. I don't know if this was just because they were on so many plains and mountains, but it really helped the epic feel of the movie. The shot from Gandalf's window down towards Osgiliath was awesome.

I'm glad they brought Legolas and Gimli full circle, to a real friendship. They were quite a pair, following Aragorn through the mountain, playing a second round of their counting game, and finally admitting it at the final battle (does anyone know the official name for that, btw?). Funny boys.

Favorite moments:
Treebeard calling Gandalf "young Master Gandalf," something I missed the first time

Merry and Pippin's farewell at Edoras, and also their reunion

Pippin's song for Denethor

Eowyn saying "I am no man" and her subsequent ass-kicking of the Witch-King

Pippin saving Faramir from the fire

Pippin in all of his scenes, really

The whole scene with Frodo telling Sam to go home broke my heart (see icon, by [livejournal.com profile] gwaith)

Sam's "Don't go where I can't follow"

The battles. I actually started shaking from incidental adrenaline. The charge of the Rohirrim at the Battle of Pelennor Fields was the most incredible sight I have ever seen in a movie.

"I'm glad you're with me, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things."

All the endings. I know the critics bitched about them, but they were all perfect. I wish they had included the Houses of Healing, but I guess that's what the Extended Edition is for.

The goodbyes at the dock, and Frodo's smile

Looking back, despite my love for Aragorn and the people of Rohan, I'm a hobbit-girl at heart. I'd rather walk through the Shire than explore Minas Tirith, visit Lothlorien, or even ride across the Rohan.

I really need the soundtrack. I have to go get that sometime this week.

After I got back, I sat down and re-read The Care and Feeding of Hobbits. I'm sure everyone who's ever looked for LotR fic has read this, but those who don't usually read in this fandom definitely should make an exception. Written from Boromir's POV during Fellowship, it describes several scenes from the long journey. It's sweet and funny and wonderful. It sneaks in through the backdoor, telling of the quiet moments and conversations Boromir has with the hobbits, and through the small things it makes you weep for the larger ones. I didn't cry for Boromir's death until I read this story, and then I just broke down. God, it gets me every time.

Coming next post: the long and boring (but fun for me!) story of my first week of holidays.
