Friday Fannish Five

List the 5 series (tv, book, or movies) that best kept their quality, from beginning to end.

I didn't let myself consider any TV still on-air in case I jinxed it, so this is what I ended up with:

1) Avatar: The Last Airbender
Far and away the TV show that never let me down

2) Vorkosigan saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Let me tell you how much I love this series and how it shaped me as a person. No, it is too much, let me sum up: MADE OF AWESOME.

3) Due South
So awesome it still has an active and recruiting fandom after two cancellations, a lead actor switcheroo, and 15 years gone

4) The Thief series - Megan Whalen Turner
Not only is the world fascinating and the characters human and complex, but each book pulls off some sort of insane narrative innovation on top of an amazing plot.

5) Ouran High School Host Club
A delightful little gem of cracktastic adorable, all the way through.

Hmmm. It's interesting that 2 of the 3 TV shows I chose are animated. I wonder if that has to do with the amount of preplanning that animation requires, and how it effects the continuity of the show.

I've been meaning to get into the Vorkosigan saga, but I tend to do much better with fantasy rather than scifi, so I've been a little iffy about actually hunting down the books. However, I might have to give them a try when I finish the series I'm currently reading, if they're that awesome! :D

4) The Thief series - Megan Whalen Turner
Not only is the world fascinating and the characters human and complex, but each book pulls off some sort of insane narrative innovation on top of an amazing plot.</I HEE, I was actually just flailing to one of my friends about how much I love these books - and how much they do pretty much everything I love and in such an awesome way - a few minutes ago in an email. I love this series so, so, so much!

THEY ARE AMAZING. They are scifi, but they're mostly just very human. God, I could read her characters and dialogue for days. I do recommend reading them in timeline order, though if you get stuck on the first two books with Cordelia (Shards of Honor and Barrayar, sometimes double-volumed as Cordelia's Honor) -- I can't imagine you will, but some people do -- skip to The Warrior's Apprentice. If you aren't addicted after that, I'll eat my flashdrive.

I just read the fourth book and I already can't wait for the next one! ♥

I miss our blue "love shack" house!

You gonna visit me any time before (Or after!)I move to Oakland? (and if you're thinking after, you really should -- I know Zaza is visiting San Fran in August.. we can have a get together! Also, I have learned how to cook without getting cute firemen to our house and trying to make them kiss Sarah Palin, so you can eat at Chez Yumin as well as a number of fantastic restaurants. Good times.)

Our house was the best! *hugs*

I actually talked to Lindsey about it! How long will you be there? (you might want to move this to email if the info is private)

Also, I have learned how to cook without getting cute firemen to our house and trying to make them kiss Sarah Palin

LOL, I love that that sentence makes sense to me.

Oh, man, Ouran. After high school I only watched a handful of anime shows, and the summer that I was waiting eagerly for every next episode to come out from the fansubbers was amazing. (Well, the actual summer sucked, but Ouran was awesome.) And omg Hulu has the whole thing up. Probably dubbed, though. The manga is pretty good from the few volumes I've read.

edit: OMG IT IS NOT DUBBED IT IS SUBTITLED :DDDD

I know I have copies somewhere but I figure it's so much easier to watch them on Hulu than digging through wherever. They do have anime! IT IS AMAZING. Although mostly I am kind of "Yeah, I would have been interested in that five years ago . . ." It was weird when the majority of my crushes started being three-dimensional again!

Oh Vorkosigan saga! I remember that summer so fondly, it just goes to show that sometimes books can be just as good as having friends. (/ almost-but-not-quite-sarcasm)

So I should check out the Thief?

And how unfair is it that the Tomorrow When the War Began movie isn't coming out until after I'm in Indiana? Extremely.

The Thief is *so* good, so yes! The first book is just pure delight, with awesome worldbuilding and mythology and Gen is the most engaging, shameless narrator you will ever find. And the sequels are also deeply awesome, but hard to talk about without spoiling the first book!

And how unfair is it that the Tomorrow When the War Began movie isn't coming out until after I'm in Indiana?

Epically! I'll have to visit you or something :)
