hearts and nicotine

I've been catching up on the last month of LJ and putting the finishing touches on my secret project, so I'm full of fannish love. Fortuitously, this very appropriate meme is going around:

Reply to this post, and I'll tell you one reason why I like you. Then repost this [if you like] and spread the love.

In the continuing saga of how [livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits and I are hopeless couch potatoes, we have been watching old episodes of The Pretender, and it's a little surreal how much I think I imprinted on this show and its characters. Jarod has reminded me at different times of Benton Fraser, Michael Westen and Charlie Crews, and all the charming con men, criminals with hearts of gold, and innocent men on the run that I adore.

Miss Parker is just as gorgeously competent and sleekly ruthless and stunningly vulnerable as I remember, and her archetype echoes in all the female characters I love who are incredible at their jobs, survivors, and a little broken - Temperance Brennan, Ekaterin Vorsoisson, Harriet Vane, Dani Reese, Kate Beckett, Aeryn Sun, Veronica Mars. Parker/Jarod as a pairing (wow, it's been awhile since I had a fandom with zero slash pairings) are just as delightful as I remember, especially when they are in the same room/handcuffed together/hostages in the same bank. They bring out all the hidden sides of each other, and they're so fucked up in totally different ways, and you have to love the way they are best(/only) friends and best enemies at the same time.

Also, they are just so damn pretty. :D

Although the show is more dated than, say, Due South, and not insignificantly cheesy, I've noticed a solid number of POC guests, and I enjoy how broadly Jarod makes friends - a mixed bag of age, race, and varying levels of normality. His canonically extraordinary empathy makes him rather impervious to bigotry, since the first thing he sees is someone's humanity (though he has unsurprising preference for outsiders and families). After watching Criminal Minds, though, his vengeance on the villains of the week is disturbingly vicious.

(Jarod is also one of those little-black-dress characters who make crossover fics a dream. IIRC, the show even did crossover episodes with Profiler, which was on at the same time, and my brain is being swamped with bunnies.)

I'm looking forward to revisiting the longer plot arcs, which I remember as having enough retcons to make even DC Comics blush; also, Jeffery Donovan playing Jarod's brother Kyle should be a crazy blast from the past.

Southland tonight! *points to icon* Everybody watch!

aw, pretender. :)

and me!

The Pretender is totally one of those shows every fangirl watched in the 90s, isn't it? All that scorching UST and woobie!Jarod and every undercover cliche ever - it might as well have Made For Fandom stamped on it. ;)

Oh, you. ♥ You have a joy and a passion for life and stories that you share with everyone you come in contact with, and I am so glad to have met you in person, because you are every bit as delightful and warm as online.

*beams* Thank you!

OMG I KNEW I KNEW JEFFERY DONOVAN FROM SOMEWHERE! :O :D

I love Pretender and yep, definitely crossovers with Profiler (two of them). I think with both Sam and Rachel.

Wow. I so want both shows on dvd! And Millenium, while we're at it - wasn't there a crossover with Millenium and Profiler? Or was it X-Files?

:)

I know, right?! He was also on that show Touching Evil, which I saw a few eps of before it got canceled.

Man, the complete series was really cheap on Amazon the other day, but now it's back up into expensive range. Boo. Millenium.... wait, I knew some people in Farscape fandom who watched that, I think. Some sort of futuristic thing, wasn't it? Or am I getting my 90s shows mixed up?

And you get a meme response, whether you want it or not! I love how cheerful you always seem, and your archaeology/anthropology nerdiness makes my own geeky heart go pitterpat. Plus, you are Australian - always excellent ;)

Wait, there was a meme! HEH reading comprehension fail in teh mornings! Both you and [livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits bring the NOMmy meta to the yard on all my favourite shows and it makes my brain very happy indeed! :D Especially as I tend to be going, "Wow, didn't think of that!" ALL THE TIME GUYS. ALL THE TIME.

Is this the American Touching Evil?

And Millenium was the one about Lance Henrickson FIGHTING WEIRDASS CRIME. Pretty sure he's set at the same time as Profiler and he has special magic powers of stopping (or starting, can't remember now) the apocalypse. Also, Terry O'Quinn kept guest starring. Hm. I'm thinking crossover with the X-Files now, because I remember getting horribly confused at the start of the first X-Files movie because he blew himself up on purpose. But it wasn't the same person as in Millenium. I hope.

Desperately need to rewatch as all my details are fuzzy.

:)

Awww. We do kinda have a meta feedback loop going between us, don't we? Only a fraction of the stuff we talk about makes it to LJ, too. If you're ever in Austin, you are welcome to come witness it :)

Yeah, the US remake.

Terry O'Quinn! He's a classic.

ME ME ME.

hi :)

[identity profile] thespatz.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
I admire your bravery in changing your chosen career, and your strength in dealing with the fallout, though I suspect you don't feel that way.

Also, you wear a low-cut shirt like nobody's business. *leers*

[identity profile] gingerwall.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
This seems like some kind of scam - all I have to do is reply and then I get awesomeness? Where's the catch? Shouldn't I have to write awesomeness about you? Like "TheSpatz always has something interesting to think about but also appreciates balance in life. She taught me how to be lazy and indulgent in the best senses of both words, and yet also somehow thought that it would be a good idea for us to attend and do work for two different high schools, because one just wasn't good enough."

P.S. Do you think [livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits would want to be my internet friend? I kind of want to respect her lj/rl privacy so I haven't been snooping. yet.

[identity profile] inmyriadbits.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
If this is who I think it is (and I'm just gonna guess: we carpooled freshman year, and you're the one who isn't a boy), all I have to say is: girl, why haven't you friended me already? :P

[identity profile] thespatz.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*blushes* I MISS YOU. What am I going to do when you go back to school? Other than aid in your procrastination like a good friend, anyway. ;) I love that I have now been friends with you for almost a decade - you make me feel so comfortable and awesome, like we have all this history but I could accidentally get sucked into a time vortex for years and still be friends with you on the other side. I admire your determination and myriad, diverse passions, and you're really accepting but you don't stand for BS. And you are a good cuddler. :D

And, hey, carpooling was your idea! You were the one who knew Nevin. I blame it all on you. *nods firmly* I still remember the Braintree Trust. I have my eye on you, missy.

What Lindsey said. ;)

[identity profile] gingerwall.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
You are too kind and you make me feel too old. Almost a decade! Geesh. It feels like just yesterday we were both laughing at Mr. Webster's "plucky like Jesus" comments and crushing over JoshD.

[identity profile] thespatz.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's been almost half a lifetime! muahahaha

Oh, JoshD, master of the ribbon dance (though I remember crushing more on RyanF in Webster's class, honestly). Do you know what JD's up to these days?

[identity profile] inmyriadbits.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, do me!

Don't forget Napoleon Solo or the Doctor on that list. :D

But I'm a teensy bit annoyed that you stole ALL the things I was going to say in my post about our Pretender marathon. *narrows eyes*

[identity profile] thespatz.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I like that you get all of my jokes (even the bad ones), among many many many other things. But I'll refrain from detailing them all, because someone has to keep an eye on your ego. *g*

NAPOLEON! That's who I was forgetting! I was trying to remember the guys we discussed, but ended up sticking Charlie in and call it quits at three.

Whoops? :D?

[identity profile] inmyriadbits.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 08:20 am (UTC)(link)

*bows* Glad to be of service! Another thing to add to the list, eh? :D

Heh. It's okay; as you see, I decided that I could just link to your post and call it a day. And then I didn't have to be, like, eloquent and shit. (I did particularly like your description of Miss Parker as gorgeously competent and sleekly ruthless and stunningly vulnerable, btw.)

[identity profile] thespatz.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
*curtsy* Thank ye.

Katie, you don't have to do me (I don't have a LJ account and can't reciprocate), but I wanted to say hi! I love you and I'm still reading your blog and miss you Oh So Much. It was so great when you came to visit Wesleyan, even if we just stayed in my room and watched 30 Rock :-P. Where are you cowgirl, and when might you be around LA/NY/Boston?

<3 <3 <3!
