Supernatural finale!!!
Oh GOD I love this show SO MUCH. Thank you, CW, for recognizing the awesome and giving us a chance at more.
The last thing I expected to be doing at the end of this episode was grinning, but there I was, smiling at the Winchesters, and it wasn'tjust because they're so pretty. Oh, wow. I should not be writing this so soon after watching the end.
It's just. How perfect was that last shot? Callbacks can be incredibly stale (see PotC2 for some, uh, stunning examples of this), but this was a frame, bookends for a journey. Visually the same, tonally so different. Obviously, the Winchesters are not done, but they checked that fucker off their To Do list and saw their daddy and hugged and catharsis is a beautiful damn thing.
Sam is not stupid, and Dean is not a great liar. Thank you for not dragging that secret out, Kripke.
Oh, the look on Dean's face at the end. He totally believes Sam can do anything, and he was just so happy to have him there. *flails* (Perhaps he knows, as we do, that there's no wayin hell he's going to hell)
The Colt-as-a-key bit was cool. Explains the weird beveling on the muzzle. The Samuel Colt history was totally eye-roll material, though. Holy shit, how AWESOME were the escaping demon graphics? The flickering people in the graveyard and the smoke-snake demons and the death of the YED and the exploding church.
The temptation scene with Jake at the railroad crossing was weak. First you threaten his family, and then he's gonna pitch in with you for fame and glory? Maybe if they had set it up with more background, but my feeling from last time was that this man is a fighter, not greedy. There should have been *something* more. Eh. Whatever. There was so much awesome I'll let it slide.
My thinking is that Sam's abilities will be central next season. Ava could control demons, and that would be real handy right now. Can he use them without being evil? Will he team up with other psykids? Is he wholly Sammy, or did he come back with some smudges? (I don't think so, but that was the perfect thing for the demon to say to fuck with Dean. Oh, Dean.)
I'm sorta going backward through the ep, here. So. The first scene with Bobby felt really uneven, though I loved parts, like when Dean suddenly shouted. But when we got to Dean and his monologue about protecting Sam, I started sobbing about two sentences in because it *hit* me all of a sudden: this is Sam dead, this is Dean broken and desperate and hating himself. Ow. Well played, Mr. Ackles. Damn.
Liked this demon better than the one in Crossroad Blues. She was still all sexy-soul-sucking, but in a more experienced demeanor.
The scene with Bobby yelling at Dean was perfect. Total fanservice, but perfect.
Hello, again, Carry on My Wayward Son. It's good to have you on the show tonight! Another successful callback ;)
I'm so thrilled at the world right now. There may be more talking about it later.
ETA: Two things I remembered. First, the placement of the slash on Dean's forehead = exactly the same as IMToD. Not sure what to make of it yet, too tired.
Second, I think Sam had totally figured out what Dean had done when he killed Jake. That anger wasn't just for him - it was for what he dreaded Dean had done because of Jake, as well as for his own death.
