What do you call ...

A creek.

Shopping cart.

Lunchbox.

Sofa

6. the device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?

7. the covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?

Screened-in porch, to differentiate it to the back porch, which is really a deck...

9. a flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?

Pancakes

10. a long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?

A sub.

11. the piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?

Speedos for the spandex atrocities, swim suits for the baggy kind.

13. putting a room in order?

Cleaning.

14. a flying insect that glows in the dark?

Firefly.

15. the little insect that curls up into a ball?

Roly-poly. Doodlebug is also fun, but not as instinctual.

16. the children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?

See-saw.

17. how do you eat your pizza?

From the pointy end to the crust, then the crust is eaten from the short end across.

18. the act of private citizens putting up signs and selling their used stuff?

Garage sale.

19. the evening meal?

Dinner, though my granny still calls it supper.

20. the thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?

Basement, though no one here has them, really, because the soil is crappy for that.

The other day in my creative writing class, we were working on poetry, so we did that exercise that all teachers surely have done at one time or another: screw up a classic bit of poetry as simply as possible. Points for only punctuation changes, and for as few words as possible. My favorites (try reading out loud; it sounds more appalling that way):

The Iliad, from one of those long introductory lists that Homer loved to do:
"then Achilles, who we knew"
became
"then Achilles. Who knew?"

and one of mine, from Poe's Annabelle Lee:
"But we loved with a love that was more than love"
became
"But we loved with a love that was more than like"

*****

I finally figured out a good reason to dislike Max in Dark Angel S2 so much (not that you need much of an excuse, with all the whining she does): Rogue, from X-Men, couldn't touch anyone for the rest of her life, and here Max is, letting her relationship, which was based on love of more than Logan's physicality, get ruined and angsty by a temporary little virus. Pffft.

I don't think I'll be buying the S2 DVD after all. Unless Alec is persuasive enough...
