Attention, Chicago people!
Dear Chicago people on my flist:
Do you know anyone who's looking for a roommate in the Chicago area circa January and would be okay with a dog + a cat? A good fannish friend of mine is relocating from California and is looking for a place.

*sigh* My computer harddrive is creeping gently towards that good night again, alas. Checkdisk has been working up til now, but I've had to repair the system files a few times to get it to start up this week, and today the screen started getting streaky. Also, I can't use sleep mode because it inevitably crashes, and the poor thing gets very hot when I leave it on. Fortunately, we got a cold front in today, so a warm laptop is more comfortable for my legs. :)
However, *I* am feeling less creaky, yay. I learned a stretching technique in my deep tissue class that's relieving the problem with my left levator scapula. I doubt anyone wants to read my feelings about PNF and CRAC stretching (much less PIR and RI), but I am excite, ya'll.

I went to see Skyfall with
inmyriadbits before she had to work it, and I have Opinions. I might talk about it more at some point, because it took Lindsey and I quite a bit of talking to decide what the problem(s) were and why, but not tonight.
The movie was problematic on a number of levels, and I can't imagine why so many critics are giving it high ratings. Argh, the more I think about it the more angry I get. Even though the acting was superb and the direction was beautiful, and even if they don't share my feminist objections, they should be able to recognize shitty pacing and plot-motivated-stupid and too much tell-don't-show when they see it. This review does an excellent, coherent job of summing up most of my feelings, but additionally, it felt like it was trying to be a character drama with action scenes stuffed in, and the individual conversations were nuanced and captivating, but the in-between bits make less and less sense the more I think about them.
Lindsey also said, "It felt like they were preaching to the choir, except the choir has decamped to the bar and doesn't want to be preached at right now, thanks." We don't need to be convinced that spies are necessary. The winks to old Bond were sometimes okay (the Aston Martin, the Walther PPK), but the ending? Ugh. We do not want old Bond back. We want what we were promised from the reboot: a modern Bond.

Ahaha, awesome.
To be fair, it was really only when I started thinking about it that I got my hate on. Objectively, this is miles better than any other Bond movie and most other action movies. I think I'm mostly just annoyed that everyone's gushing over what is essentially a flawed movie, both as a film and from a feminist perspective. 93% on Rotten Tomatoes? Seriously? No.

(sorry to be posting from-the-past, here, but I only saw it a week ago and apparently I still have All The Anger.)
