well that's disappointing
I was momentarily excited about the sync feature on Google Docs - excuse me, Google Drive - but that is no longer the case.
I installed the program and did a test run by logging into on one of my seldom-used accounts. The TXT and ODT file I put in the on-computer sync folder uploaded right away, but you can't edit the TXT file and you can't even view the ODT. There's a perky little link that says I can "do more with apps for Google Drive"...which I can't install unless I'm using Google Chrome.
Okay, says I, I'll try reverse compatibility. So I created a test document in the browser, which showed up right away in the synched desktop folder. Yay!
...Except it's not actually a file, it's a glorified shortcut. It'll open up the file in your browser, but there's no actual data stored. Viewing the file in Notepad or a word processing program reveals the only data is a URL and some basic coding. So the two things I want - an on-computer backup and the ability to edit offline - are not going to happen. Way to fail on functionality, Google. The FAQ assures me that offline capability is available with an app and Chrome, but fuck that noise.
*sigh* Back to the old method of doing it all manually, I guess. Lame.
