Torture by Proxy (link from [livejournal.com profile] celli)

Y'know, I try and think the best of my country, because I really love it, but then I read things like this, and I can't stop *crying*. I can't even really blame Bush for this one (much as I might like to). Fucking hell. I feel betrayed. *swipes at tears*

And the depressing thing is that everything in this article... It doesn't surprise me at all.

God, sometimes I wish I could just move. I love this country, or at least the concept it's supposed to represent, but with how it is now... It's just so depressing to think of it all.

I send you hugs. Although I don't know if that helps with disillusionment.

Being a Canadian means Mr. Arar's case has been a really huge issue here. Our Prime Minister met with Bush this morning (possibly yesterday) and the issue of deportation was discussed. The Minister in charge in the U.S. has agreed to notify his Canadian counterpart when deporting Canadians to third party countries, but beyond that...it's really up to the US government.
I'm sure people will come to their senses, and maybe if you write your congressperson (what's a regional rep. in the US called?) something can be done to prevent this happening to anyone else. If they know it's important to the people voting for them, they might implement actual policy change.
Hugs again.

Hugs always help ;) Thanks, dear.

Well, I hope people will be sensible, but that's never been one of the Bush admin's strong points. And I should write to my representative. I am a lazy bum and put homework first, but I should write to him. I have to figure out who he *is* now, since they re-worked all the districts in Texas recently. My mom wasn't very pleased about that, and not just because she had to work forever last summer while the legislature was in session: the Republicans basically screwed the districts up to benefit their reelection, not the consituents. Bloody idiots.

Hey! You got an icon! And it's John William Waterhouse, too! My sister loves his paintings--she has a print of The Lady of Shalott--and so do I. Nifty ;)

Yay! Waterhouse is my favourite!
I have a huge Lady of Shalott hanging over my computer that I got at the Tate museum. They've got tons of Pre-Raphaelite stuff there, it's fantastic. I spent hours staring at these paintings, they're so beautiful.
The conservative gov. in Ontario tried doing the same district trick..and we booted 'em out of office. Oh yeah!
