Dear anyone who was planning to go see Sucker Punch:

Don't go see Sucker Punch.

Seriously. Don't.

It's exactly as problematic as the trailers suggest, with bonus triggers for anyone who's a survivor of rape or abuse. And all the special effects in the world (and the movie had ALL of them) can't make up for the dreadful script. People were actively laughing at the dialogue, y'all. Spare yourselves the pain.

We saw it last night. It was... Um, I was enjoying it guiltily for the first 2/3 and then the killing and the lobotomizing and the ending and I literally said aloud, "YOU BROKE YOUR MOVIE >:("

I'd argue the best part of the movie was the Fast Five trailer, but otherwise I agree.

I wanted to like it, and it was very shiny, but ugh. UGH. So problematic, on top of the terrible script/dialogue. Like, I could have forgiven bad dialogue in an action movie, but the structure was a hot mess. Why didn't we see more of the asylum? We spent like two scenes there, but I was invested in girl-trying-not-to-get-lobotomized, not the brothel storyline, and definitely not the pure visual cotton candy of the third level. Snyder didn't even try to maintain a plotline on that level, and it suffered for it. If he had integrated the levels, done the hard work to show us how the fantasy echoed reality (like he partially did in the kitchen during the knife scene), it might have been a better movie. But he was clearly more interested in the sexy brothel/anime fighting bullshit, and I got the sense he was hand-waving how shit was happening in reality because it was too hard to write. What a waste.

I *was* intrigued by the the main-character-isn't-the-hero/survivor thing, but the execution was muddled and ridiculous. Like, why didn't Sweet Pea call the police and let them know someone was going to get illegally lobotomized? She just PTFO'd. Why didn't Baby Doll SAY anything? Why can't women be heroes without being martyrs? ARGH RAGE.

I did like Emily Browning, and the girl who played Amber was unexpectedly charming. But they *completely wasted* Carla Gugino and Jon Hamm, wow.

We did not get a Fast Five trailer! I'd be jealous, but Steve Rogers >>> Vin Diesel.

The triggers were bad & I had no idea what was going on, but I liked it. I went in expecting it to be campy fun like Bitchslap! but alas, it took itself seriously. Maybe that's why it wasn't as good as it could have been.
