Inception: nuts and bolts
I went to see Inception for the second time - just as enjoyable as the first time, and I absorbed a lot more of the universe rules this time around.
Unfortunately, *that* meant discovering that Inception Math timescale thing that has been linked in every pimp post and picspam I've seen so far, which I have been basing all of my mental math on?
It's wrong! At least, wrong during the Fischer job. And during any dream sharing that isn't Ariadne's training.
In Inception, the time expansion felt in shared dreaming is due to brain activity increasing in the dream state. Different compounds increase brain activity at different rates, and there are at least three distinct scenarios set up in the movie.
The Evidence:
1. Mombasa
one RL hour = 10 dream hours
The dreamers in Yusuf's basement in Mombasa dream "3 or 4 hours" to get a dream experience of 40 hours
2. Ariadne's training
1 RL hour = 12 dream hours
Arthur says "five minutes in the real world gets you an hour in the dream" when Ariadne is training with Cobb
3. The Fischer job
1 RL hour = 20 dream hours
There's quite a bit of evidence for this one:
--Yusuf's compound for the Fischer job accelerates brain activity to "about 20 times normal."
--Cobb expands for Eames that 10 hours of flight time equals about a week on Level 1, six months on Level 2, and 10 years on Level 3.
Or, more precisely: 10 hours (RL) = 8.3 days (L1) = 166.6 days/23.8 weeks/~6 months (L2) = 9 years (L3) = 180 years (Limbo)
--When they miss the first kick, Cobb does some furious mental math: "Yusuf has ten seconds to the jump, which give Arthur three minutes [3 min 20 sec, actually], which gives us 60 minutes"
On the upside, this means that fic writers can use a broad range of time ratios when writing dreams, provided they write in a chemist who knows what he's doing. And it implies that earlier in their careers, they might have had much less time in the dreams, which might have been a motivation for layered dreaming in the first place.

Btw, I just re-read Tomorrow when the war began for the first time since high school. It's still just as good. I am so excited for the movie! And sad that we will not be together.

And if you ever have the extra cash and want to visit, just let me know, and I'll try to make a window in my school work.
