Spring and superheroes

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka! You have the same birthday as my grandmother, which is awesome, although she is 89 and you are considerably younger ;)

[livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits posted a funny(/awful) story from our granny's birthday lunch before I could beat her to it.

Via [livejournal.com profile] dotfic, I learned that a minor DC comics character that I was fond of got fridged. (warning: TV Tropes link!) The character was Lian Harper, the ten-year-old daughter of Roy Harper. There's more information here. Since she's a kid, there's very little chance of the usual comics resurrection, and they managed to ruin another character's honor along the way.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with DC canon, this is like if Castle was a less-notorious but respected member of the crime-fighting community and someone killed Alexis. And then Martha killed someone in cold blood in revenge.

ARGH.

The really sad thing is, they kind of didn't. Ollie's killed. Plenty of times. Never quite in cold blood, but he admitted that in The Longbow Hunters he could have stopped Dinah's torturers without killing them. He doesn't like killing, and it always eventually builds up and sends him to the ashram to have a nervous breakdown, but he does it. So they essentially wasted Lian's death in an effort to make Ollie do something he totally already does (not that it would have been okay if it was Ollie's first kill, but you know what I mean). I saw one comment that was like "It's like the SURPRISE SHOCK ENDING of a Flash comic being 'Flash beats the bad guy by running really fast.'"
