Yay! My sister Emma is home for Thanksgiving, and we all went to see the third Matrix movie, which I was less than pleased with. Okay, what the hell was with the ending? Did they *have* to sledgehammer the Neo-is-Christ thing into our skulls? Jeez. I mean, the way he was lying on the sledge thing, the sacrifice-for-the-good-of-humanity, blah blah blah... *honestly*. I spent the whole final battle thinking to myself, "Okay, hon, just save the world already, and try to keep the dramatics to a minimum, 'kay?" The only time I was on the edge of my seat was during the Zion battle scenes. The only thrills of joy I felt were when Agent Smith showed up, drawing his sentences out through a psychotic, menacing smile. I cared more about these minor characters-- was more frightened for and by those characters --than the 'hero' of the movie. Well, that, and the fact that those Sentinels were just cool shit.
To be fair, I did cry when Trinity died, but partially because of the utter tragedy of what happened to her character. Okay, sure, have her fall in love, but don't suck her spirit out through a straw, grind glucose into it, and tape it back into place. What happened to the girl that wouldn't leave Morpheus behind? When did her personality become so wrapped up in helping Neo that she lost her ideals, her passionate defense of humanity outside of the One? That was part of what we fell in love with in the beginning, and presumably what Neo fell in love with. What happened to her?
The real kicker is that they could have left it at the first movie, and everyone would have been just as happy. That ending had hope, meaning, weight, purpose. Now, all we have is uncertainty- or, rather, the certainty that it can't last, that this is just a brief moment above the clouds where the sun is shining. The hell with that. Don't tell me that all of the battles were for nothing. Don't cheapen everything that has happened with a crap ending like that. What I would have liked was a prequel: what happened to the first One? Who was he? Why did he choose the way he did? And since they created all these great program characters, they should have done more with them than have them be philosophy-spewing roadstops on the way to the Great Metaphorical Death. Why did the Oracle know Sati was the creator of that sunset? How did the Merovingian know Seraph? What was up with Merv and wanting the Oracle's eyes? Why does Persephone stay with him, other than to serve as the movie's requisite not-too-subtle reference to the Greek myth? How many 'shells' has the Oracle had?
Hmm, maybe what I really want is fanfic.
In other news, I have sucked myself into a new medium to spend money on: comics. So, I'm reading The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (not done yet, so watch the spoilers if you've read), and feeling nostalgic about all the Ultimate Spider-Man comics I read at Marvel's DotComics site back when the movie came out. Then I make the mistake of remembering that we have a comic books store just a few blocks away (okay, like 15, but within walking distance), and take a little stroll over there last weekend. Then I get Emma to take me to Borders to catch up on the ones I've missed by buying the collections.
Whoops, there goes my allowance.
In more other news, any slash (or non-slash, really) readers should go here and aid fannish research. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to join Emma, who is watching Justin Theroux strike sparks off of Jennifer Garner.
