First of all, a casting spoiler for SG-1's next season. Lindsey, say it with me: WHEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, a very accurate essay on laptop usage during college lectures from Slate. The author points out a lot of off-topic uses for internet surfing, but in Film class it can be quite useful. IMDB, baby! We're all fans in that class.

Meanwhile, in homework land, I have to read 21 versions of Little Red Riding Hood. Currently, my brain is burning from the horrible rhymes perpetrated by several authors. Why? Why must I suffer this fate? There's a reason I stay away from the Pit of Voles. *sigh* Maybe it will be better once I get past the Romantic writers....

At least I have Doctor Who on the horizon, once I read some more of this crap. 'Tis a lovely carrot to tempt myself with.

21 versions of Little Red Riding Hood? Um - why? And how did you find 21 versions? And - okay, I think I'm still stuck on why. Although now I want to reread this book I have on the role sexuality plays in the legend, and I blame you somehow.

[look! I'm using a hand!porn icon just for you. Because I love you that much.]

It's a book called The Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood. The point is to see how the story changes over the centuries -- for example, LRRH dies in the early ones, and rarely in the later ones. The 20th century versions are usually fairly self-aware/mocking or deliberately change the ending. My favorite is the one from 1939 where the girl whips out an automatic and shoots the wolf, because of course wolves don't look like grandmothers, even while wearing nightgowns.

Hand!porn!!! (man, CE has pretty hands) *cries* I watched PotW last night..... I was a wreck. "Someone needs the doctor." *sobs* And he's not just dying, he knows he's changing into someone that Rose might not be able to love (things were definitely weird in the Christmas Invasion snippet). His line about being fantastic just gutted me. *flails* I want *my* Doctor back, but it's still him, and he still needs Rose, and he sacrificed himself for her, but he's changed, and she doesn't remember the kiss, and WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?!?

Okay, I WANT to read that book. I need to see if our library has it, because it's just the sort of thing I'd be into reading. Especially the later ones, since I always love it when fairytales become more mocking and sarcastic. [and the one from 1939? That would be BRILLIANT. I definitely need to read this book. And to see if there's anything similar to it for Beauty and the Beast.]

Isn't it SAD? I watched it the first time and then threw my stuffed animal against the wall, crying. Then I felt silly and cried even more. But it always gets me - from the hologram thing on, when he's talking to her and she's so upset and then all the way to the end. [and it puts that stupid "Time of Your Life" song into a very different light for me, somehow.] And I want my Doctor back too, because even though I think I'll like the new one [who also has hand!porn with Rose, thank god] he won't me my Doctor.

And I want to know what happens too! *whimpers*

I haven't read any of the theoretical stuff yet, but Jack Zipes is considered one of the best fairy tale scholars/translators around. What I have read of his work is excellent.

I watched it again last night with Lindsey, and we were both sobbing (I think I cried even more the second time around). The hologram *kills* me. This show is really not afraid to show the cost of fighting -- so MANY people die, which is why The Doctor Dances makes me happy for hours and hours later. And yes, thank god for the continued hand!porn. He's just similar enough to weird me out: his wide gawky smile, the hand-holding, the way he darts about, the way he looks at Rose. *sigh* Have you read TaraLJC's At Last (http://ljconstantine.com/fanfic/atlast.htm)? It doesn't include the short from Christmas Invasion, but the characterization made me feel better about the change.
