In a dark room outside of everything, God laid out her cards and played.
She had only one card when she started, but they grew in her hands as the possibilities split and split again: the one with life in many places, the one with life in only a few, the one with life only on Earth. The one without any life at all never split again, of course, but she kept it in her hand for sentimental value as her first, and the unique pleasure of watching the universe tick on like clockwork. Boring, but soothing.
