As always, I got so caught up in reccing things that I forgot to crosspost my own Yuletide fic! I wrote Goblin Emperor fic for rosanicus, so it was doubly nice to write for a new acquaintance and for a long-time favorite fandom that I'd never written before!

Happy Yuletide, everyone!

My anonymous author wrote me Debris From Ancient Ruins, a fic for The Mummy about Ardeth during WWII. I was delighted they took up my prompt of Ardeth vs Nazis! Though it's more complex and bittersweet than my flippant prompt, dealing with changing times and the losses of the Medjai.

I haven't read a ton of fic yet, but two of the longer fics I've read turned out to be my favorites:

The Lost of Winter (Goblin Emperor, 20K) - in which a lost mongoose at the Vermilion Opera leads Thara and Tomasaran into a very true-to-canon casefile. With gorgeous writing and character voices, this feels like a little canon novella slipped in right after The Grief of Stones.

a key that winds through secret wards (Nine Worlds, 12K) - in the aftermath of the Emerald Conspiracy, Cliopher has to prove his innocence by magically sharing memories with His Radiancy. Great premise with lots of THEM feels.

1) I posted my Yuletide story! Every year I swear I'm not going to procrastinate and then I do - but I always make the deadline.

2) I have bookmarked all of my old saved fic up through 2018! This officially makes me the MOST caught up on bookmarking that I have ever been - at slightly under 5 years, and close to 4 since I only have 6 left from 2018 - since I started reading fic in 2000 and started bookmarking on Delicious in 2006. No one's excited about this except me, but you're gonna get a treatise about my bookmarking process anyway.

He dares himself to do better. And with a planet on the line and no proof but his own memories, he knows that "better" means he'll need some help.

Classic time-travel fix-it elevated by a mid-story TOS-flavored twist! A wonderful adventure.

Commander Fox's Ultimate Bucket List by blackkat/ @blackkatmagic (Star Wars, Fox/Mace)

Fox has a second chance, a to-do list, a stolen lightsaber, and a complete willingness to give everyone around him grey hairs. Plus a Jedi Master to seduce. It's going to be a ride.

*cackles* Fox deserved this SO MUCH! Hilarious and satisfying.

Magic Casements by @edwardianspinsteraunt (A Little Princess, gen)

Becky is the one who rescues Mr Carrisford's monkey, and so the one whom the Magic happens to instead.

Captures the sweet magic and friendship of the original while making some sharp points about its class issues.

INVESTIGATIONS

The Striped Leg by wildwestwind (A Study in Emerald, gen)

The Adventure of The Speckled Band, set in the world of A Study In Emerald.

This author really knows their Lovecraft, which brings a rich and creepy new dimension to this very classic case. Mmm, pastiche perfection.

A Country Mile by @bropunzeling (Think of England, Fen/Pat)

“You want us to go to a house party? Really?”
“I hate to ask it of you,” Daniel said, voice muffled in that queer way one got with the telephone. "But I need someone I can trust to look after things there until then. Would you?”
Fen and Pat attend a house party and encounter: poison (pen letters); poison (literal); perilous dinner conversation; potential friendship; and physics.

Danger, espionage, female friendship, a lady scientist, general competence in the face of misogyny, Fen's self-esteem issues vs Pat's unswerving support, and a damn good read: what more could you want?

What It All Comes Down To by phnelt/ @phneltwrites (Think of England, canon pairings)

“Those blighters—” strong language from Fen there. Pat has been working on her in regards to fruity language but Fen hasn’t much taken to it. “ —won’t let women shoot at these newfangled Olympics games, despite England boasting some of the best women shooters in the world. Present company very much included.” Fen gets so heated when she advocates. It brings up a healthy colour to her cheeks. Pat smiles at her, helplessly. “So we simply must show them how good women can be by having Pat train you up from nothing so you can trounce them in the name of her club and in front of the eyes of God and the Olympic Committee.” If this wasn’t obviously one of Fen’s schemes it would be clear after her speech.

Charming friendship-centric story, with some light intrigue on the civilian side of things for once.

UNEXPECTED MEETINGS

Poiesis (Making) by ama (Queen's Thief, gen + Costis/Kamet)

Kamet is bewildered by a summons he receives to meet with the King of Sounis. After all, what could they possibly have to discuss?

Post-canon interlude where Kamet and Sophos bond over poetry, with great character writing.

Scene on a Balcony by Mary_West (Lord Peter, gen + Sylvia/Eiluned)

8th October 1935 and it's the wedding of the year - Lord Peter Wimsey and Miss Harriet Vane have finally tied the knot. But the wedding breakfast (served at the Dowager Duchess' London house) is getting a little heated. So the balcony is an excellent place to which to escape.

If anyone ever needed a sensible lesbian auntie, it's Jerry - but also this is sweet and funny and well-observed, from the wedding details to the practicalities of being queer at the time.

The Nuclear Option by Tangerine/ @atangeriner (From Eroica with Love, Klaus/Dorian)

When Klaus needs help with a family affair, Dorian is more than happy to offer his services.

Superb, satisfying, full of banter and yearning, and I love the slow reveal of wtf is going on with Klaus.

Time Enough by fresne/ @fresne999 (Ethan of Athos, Ethan/Terrence)

Terrence Cee had spent most of his life feeling like a jumpship caught in the gravity well of a blackhole. Engines on full bore. Only able to keep out of the crushing center, but never able to escape. Now in his new life on Athos, he found himself unsure of how to find a new pace.
Ethan wondered if there was a way to get his love life gestating again. Not frozen like zygotes stored in a bio-freezer against some eventual future.

Sweet get-together for the boys that addresses Terrence's trauma and socially deficient upbringing, plus meet-the-family shenanigans and rich worldbuilding for Athos in all its problematic glory. I am retroactively very pleased with myself for nominating this fandom for Yuletide (even if it took me a few months to get around to this one)!

and remains quiet by marycrawford/ @mcvices (Nirvana in Fire, gen)

She picks up her cup and sips delicately of the chrysanthemum tea she brought. It is cooling and calming. She doesn’t need calming, but Mei Changsu might. She is about to administer a medicine that the patient will find disagreeable.
The patient looks fevered, at the moment. “What is wrong with Jingyan?”

The AU divergence point is a little oblique - if I'm reading correctly, the Emperor dies early during the war and Consort Jing takes advantage of her Dowager status to go north to see MCS - but honestly who cares about the premise, because holy SHIT this author writes Consort Jing to perfection, in all her ruthlessly compassionate (or compassionately ruthless?) complexity.

PORN WITH FEELINGS

No Pity, But a Little Love by beautifulduckweed (Will Darling Adventures, Will/Kim)

The author's summary is a mess so I'm leaving it out, but this is a great post-series look at their relationship that captures their banter and mutual delight, plus Will getting exposed to more queer spaces, all structured around Will attempting anal sex again under less fraught circumstances.

Privacy by Resonant (Due South, Fraser/RayK)

“Guess it’s a while since you had a door with a lock on it?”
“I’ve never had a door with a lock on it."

I don't know how long it's been since Resonant wrote new DS fic, but she always nails (heh) their weird and weird-about-each-other charm and this is no exception!

through the desert, repenting by beautifulduckweed (Think of England, Archie/Daniel)

Daniel da Silva comes face-to-face with the deadly consequences of making a mistake and turns to a bad childhood habit to cope—but it's not enough, and Archie Curtis doesn't know how to help.

AKA the one where Archie counters Daniel's self-harm with sex, or as the author's tags put it "In the absence of therapy banging it out will have to do".

On the Threshold [Biggles] - delightful AU where an injured von Stalhein shows up on Biggles’s doorstep, and Biggles is very Biggles about it. I am extremely for the ‘bad guy goes to his honorable enemy for help (and is not disappointed)’ trope, and this one was executed perfectly. (Biggles/von Stalhein)

RECS

I tend to go by fandoms when I binge Yuletide, and also I slept until 1 (I think I’m still run down from my horrible cold last week, and this was my first day with no work and no family obligations), so it’s just The Goblin Emperor/Witness for the Dead fic today.

it gets okay to praise the day - beautiful tag to The Grief of Stones, with some much-needed comfort and healing for Thara, and some clever resolution of a few plot threads, and a brief and lovely appearance by Maia. (Thara/Iana)

dear fellow traveler - nifty story that starts with an academic piece about a tradition of the emperor crossing the Wisdom Bridge, and then increasingly closer POVs peeling back to the truth of how it started. A great look at the future of Maia’s reign from several vantages. (mostly gen, background Csethiro/Maia)

Need To Know - in which Csethiro tracks down Maia after the assassination attempt, with all of her fierce cleverness at work. Great POV for her. (Csethiro/Maia)

Yuletide presents!

I received TWO fics this year, both of them for Biggles, so I've been delighting in the foe-yay h/c of it all. I read The Arrangement first this morning, on the very scientific decision of it being the first email I got, and it's a wonderful post-Hatchet adventure where Biggles has a malaria recurrence mid-mission and von Stalhein ventures out in a storm to get him medicine. Oh, them ♥

[Then I had to stop reading and make two (2!) pies and attend family dinner, which was lovely. I've apparently perfected my cherry pie, which was already very good, and the accolades make all the fuss worth it. The food was delicious, the wine was plentiful, and my cousin's kids have gotten absurdly cute since the last time I saw them. Merry Christmas to me! I hope ya'll all had beautiful days if you celebrated. ♥]

My second present was the fantastic On the Threshold, an AU where von Stalhein shows up injured at Mount Street and Biggles is VERY Biggles about it :DDDDD Absolutely lovely, and jam-packed with my favorite tropes! (almost like they know me.... ;)

Yuletide reveals plus podfic

A very belated post of gifts!

First off, in mid-December I got a lovely podfic of my NIF space opera AU Solar Wind Rising by lattice_frames, which I somehow missed seeing until this week? /o\ Let's blame the Yuletide deadline. Anyway, it's great!

For Yuletide, I got a darling Cherry Magic story about Fujisaki going to a conference, fondly observing the Kurosawa/Adachi show, and making a new friend. It's extremely sweet and exactly what I asked for. Go read i can tell that we are going to be friends by duckgirlie!

Sliding in not-quite-late with these! The Untamed recs are first since I think that’s what most of ya’ll are around for, then Yuletide & related small fandoms and some random anime fandoms under the cut.

THE UNTAMED

With Absolute Splendor by Lise / @veliseraptor - I’ve seen this recced all over the place, and for good reason! Absolutely my favorite Jiang Cheng POV, as he insists that Wangxian get married at Lotus Pier then repeatedly fails to get out of his own way as he rebuilds a relationship with Wei Wuxian. His complicated layers of trauma and grief and anger are so well-written, and he’s trying so hard <3

make this chaos count by devotedbones - Wei Wuxian returns to Cloud Recesses after his travels and immediately gets in a fight with some assholes talking shit about Lan Zhan. Sounds a bit cracky, but it’s not, and Wei Wuxian’s voice is so compelling - mischievous and longing and righteous, with his belief in LWJ just enough to counterbalance his belief that he’s unwanted.

Keep the Customer Satisfied by @whenas-in-silks/WhenasInSilks - modern AU where Meng Yao deploys his Customer Service Smile and sneakiness in an actual customer service job, and Lan Xichen just keeps breaking his computer for some reason. (+ excellent comic relief from frenemy/coworker Xue Yang, and The Hat)

combat baby by dustyloves/@theo-decker - Buffy fusion, in which Lan Zhan is called as Slayer after Wei Ying’s death - but Wei Ying comes back. I was surprised by how much I liked this, since normally I am reflexively cranky when the Slayer gets AU’d to being male, but something about Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan’s trauma and anger and the weight of expectations really worked for me. And also the kinky sex. :D

The One-Body Problem by metiskit - in which Jingyi accidentally gets possessed by the Yiling Patriarch - who turns out to be a really nice guy? Hilarious, but with Wei Wuxian’s deep well of Issues as a compassionate counterpoint. Starts stronger than it finishes, imo, but absolutely worth reading.

YULETIDE & ADJACENT

I had a very quiet Yuletide this year, because I did my semi-annual fandom thing where I read all the YT fic for a fandom and then went and caught up on the last six months of fic that I'd missed. So I basically just binge-read Queen's Thief, The Goblin Emperor, and Nirvana in Fire, with side trips in anime fandoms that I've never even seen the canon for, because why not end 2020 on the appropriate 'fuck it' note.

Fic and recs roundup

This year I wrote À votre santé, 2K of food-related fluff for my favorite ridiculous action movie duology and perennial Yuletide fandom, Banlieue 13!

I was given The Trip to Beta Colony by fawatson, a charming Ethan of Athos story about Ethan and Terrence during those missing eight months of their roundtrip to Beta Colony. I was extra excited to get fic for this fandom, since I petitioned for it to be included this year (since the Vorkosigan Saga at large is long since past the limit), and pleased that the writer wrote so specifically to my prompt!

I also just posted Interference, a short B13 missing scene from my earlier story Phone Tag, in which Lola rescues a stray reporter. I'm hoping to finally finish the third story in the series sometime soon, a Leito/Damien porny post-movies coda that has been a WIP for an eternity, so it's now set up as a fic series on AO3. Yes, all the titles are phone terms I found browsing the Wikipedia category for phones. No, I will not be taking comments on that at this time. :P

Also, people may have noticed that I did not post my monthly recs for November last month - partly I was feeling uninspired by what little I had saved (November was a BUSY month), and partly I wanted to do a 12 Days of Christmas recset with themed recs for each day. FIC: Ship's Gossip (Temeraire)

My Yuletide story this year for gloriamundi!

Gloria asked for a privateering AU, which I took to mean an AU where Laurence accepts Tharkay's offer in Tongues of Serpents. I then attempted to research privateering in the Napoleonic Wars -- surprisingly difficult, because everything I found was about American privateers in the War of 1812, and that war didn't happen in Temeraire continuity, so perhaps no one is shocked that I got distracted by the question of sodomy on ships that were neither British Navy nor pirates, and this fic happened:

Starting with the THREE awesome stories I received this year!!!

(Silver in the Wood) Butterflies - a gorgeous Henry POV set post-canon, featuring strong feelings about stories (of course) and some sweet, playful Tobias/Henry.

(Silver in the Wood) Conversations on Trains and Libraries - in which Tobias is rusty at life outside the woods as well as human connections, but he’s trying. <3

(Banlieue 13) Dépaysement - anyone who has ever mentioned parkour within hearing range of me will know how much I love these ridiculous, gay af action movies, and this is a FANTASTIC post-canon story with Damien and Leïto working together and (naturally) falling in love. Worldbuilding! Banter *and* unspoken understanding! Trust and teamwork! PLUS the infamous undercover butt-window dress!!! I request this fandom every Yuletide, and I was SO DELIGHTED to get this as a treat. So delighted, that I’m rather suspicious this person knows me....

And continuing in fandom alphabetical order:

(Band Sinister) Part Per Cross - Corvin has a much better idea for what to do with virgins than sacrifice them. aka post-canon polyamory smut!

(Charm of Magpies - Jackdaw) anonymous and sweet - Perfect little coda for Jonah and Ben, domestic and a little magical and very them.

(Crown Duel) sweet basil and ivy - neat pair of outside POVs on Vidanric and Meliara, first from Savona being asked to help Mel at court, and then from the Hill Folk post-canon.

(Goblin Emperor) Light A Mourner’s Candle - in which Maia finally gets a chaplain, and it’s very wrenching but cathartic.

(Sky High) Smoke Signals - totally cute and surprisingly plotty AU where Warren doesn’t go to Sky High, but starts doing vigilante stuff on his own. Identity porn! Faily teenage romance! Arson!

Yuletide reveals!

This was an excellent Yuletide for me!!!

First of all, my story: the Yuletide algorithms in their infinite wisdom matched me with philomytha for Nirvana in Fire, which I got her into in the first place! It was really lovely writing for someone whose taste I knew well, and her prompt for a Temeraire crossover was very inspiring.

I'd say it's very accessible if you've seen NIF but don't know Temeraire at all, since you basically just need to know that a few characters are dragons now, but not at all accessible the other way around. Sorry, fellow Temeraire fans. You should watch NIF? :D

I received THREE gifts this year, which was really exciting! Two were for The Breakfast Club, based on my prompt about the gang quietly keeping in touch via notes in each other's lockers, and one was for my NIF prompt about Jingyan meeting Shen Zhui in a restaurant on MCS's hint. I loved them all, and I'm really touched that three separate people wrote me stories - the Yuletide spirit is strong this year!
