Panic show

Went to see Panic! at the Disco with Foxy Shazam and Patrick Stump on Wednesday night, and had a chance to hang out with the gang - I miss y'all! (Also, would someone tell me L's LJ? I always forget to ask that when I meet the internet people)

Since I had to get home and shower after internship, we showed up just after Foxy Shazam went on. Hey, it's not a night out unless the twins are late, right?

As [livejournal.com profile] katieupsidedown so aptly put it, Foxy Shazam is more performance art than band. Apparently, before I showed up they freaked out a girl near us so bad she made her mom take her to the car. The frontman (Eric?) is INSANE and told rambling stories, flung himself to the ground at random moments like a slapstick actor, and swung his mike & stand around in an alarming but competent fashion. He also lit three cigarettes donated by the crowd, and ATE one.

For the gymnastic part of the night's set, Eric climbed the guitarist and humped his head; the keyboardist stood on his board for the final song and played part of it with his feet, and earlier made the barrier people hold it up on their hands while he played. Basically, they were fun and ridiculous and theatrical, and MAD AS A BOX OF FROGS.

Patrick was wonderful - I don't think I've ever seen him live before? I swear, he's like a completely different person on stage now. I really liked the music - sort of funk/soul meets eighties meets gorgeous clear voice - and Patrick was bouncing around the stage and taking over people's instruments because he is an insanely talented badass. I can never hear lyrics live unless I know them already, but the songs were catchy and that retro-in-a-new-way that I like, so I will be checking out that album. (Sunny? A little assist? *g*)

Panic has been great live every time I've seen them, but I am loving Panic 3.0 on stage. I saw them at SXSW, which was an awesome crowd and fab performance but not super long, so it was cool seeing them do a headline set. Brendon's gumby faces and Spencer's solid energy and Ian's ridic guitar skills and Dallon's mocking-yet-deadpan shenanigans make a great mix for stage dynamics, and the new arrangements they can pull off are *rocking* live. Plus, they love Austin (although 70% of the bands I see say this at shows, so I can't decide if Austin is just that awesome or if they tell all the girls cities that).

The guys played almost all of the new album (everything except The Calendar and Sarah Smiles). I think I might like the album better live than recorded? Hmmm. They did a big chunk of Fever (Difference, Sins Not Tragedies, But It's Better If You Do, Time to Dance, Camisado), but only two songs from Pretty. Odd., Nine in the Afternoon, and That Green Gentleman - which Brendon said "was about weed." Oh honey, we know. Also, two covers - Florence + the Machine's Dog Days Are Over, which was surprisingly meh, and I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which was AWESOME. It was the second to last song, and they were rocking out.

Brendon wasn't as back-and-forth hyper as SXSW, but he was having fun with the songs - during Sins, for example, he sang "poise and rationality" in a hilariously prim voice once, and "well this calls for a toast" in a British accent. Apparently his voice is as gumby-like as his face. ♥

(There was also a whole thing where Brendon said his mom was awesome, and he'd totally bang her if they weren't related. Let us not speak of it. Ever.)

Other fun moments: Ian playing the Star Wars theme to Brendon's babble about Difference and evil record labels, Spencer patting Brendon on his way back to the drums while Brendon soloed 'Always', Dallon fake-fighting with Brendon and then tonguing his ear during the make-up hug.

And then my feet hurt from standing for 10 hours (including clinic) and we got pumpkin pancakes at Kerbey. Victory!

BTW, I am going to the Gypsy Picnic Trailer Food Festival on Saturday. It will my first scheduled day off since Labor Day - I had to rearrange my schedule to get it off and will pay for it next week - and I am excite! Also within walking distance: City Wide Garage Sale at Palmer. Any Austin crew want to meet up and enjoy the fun Austin-being-quirky-and-not-a-sauna tiems?

Gone, all gone! *cackles*

Oww. My left jaw is sore and super swollen, but the right side is doing fine. Overall I'm just achy and already tired of soft foods. Eat something really crunchy for me at the picnic tomorrow, please?
