DOCTOR WHO!!!
Okay, every year I decide I'm going to keep up with Doctor Who as it airs, and I always end up getting sidetracked and marathoning it after the season ends.
I have decided this is actually a good thing, because this season would have given me a HEART ATTACK.
Okay, three important things first:
1.) AMY POND, I LOVE YOU!
2.) MATT SMITH, I LOVE YOU!
3.) OMG DOCTOR/AMY/RORY OT3!!!! ♥
Wow, Stephen Moffat really hit this season out of the park. I'm amused to note that the awesomeness of the two-parters was reversed this season - awesome one first, problematic one second. For four seasons, it's been the other way 'round - meh first (Aliens of London/WW3; Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel; Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks; Sontaran Strategem/Poison Sky), awesome second (Empty Child/Doctor Dances; Human Nature/Family of Blood; Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead), plus the always-excellent finale.
Also -- and I almost died of shock on this one -- this season finale wasn't heart-crushingly sad! It was, in fact, quite happy! The Doctor didn't die! No one was stuck in an alternate dimension or traumatized from hiking across the apocalyptic Earth or had their memory erased permanently! There was a wedding and a resurrection and dorky dancing and Amy and her boys are off to the next adventure! *twirls*
River Song is growing on me. She can still be smug in a S2-Rose way that irritates me, but she's also really badass. Although she can stop saying "Spoilers!" now, please. My personal theory is that the "great man" she killed is the Doctor in a future incarnation (maybe his last regeneration?), and she only got to know him and love him after she'd already killed him, which is kind of awesome and twistedly tragic in a bizarre time-travellers-in-love way.
I really fucking love Matt Smith's Eleven. He's baby-faced and gawky and fun, and still such an old and alien soul, caring and genius and wonderful and terrifying. I love that he's impatient and gets tunnel vision (LOL, him not noticing Rory was miraculously alive) and rude and klutzy and bored by linearity, and he genuinely believes his bowtie is cool. (Let us not speak of the fez. Pointing and laughing should suffice.) I was sure the Doctor would survive the Pandorica somehow, but I was terrified that he'd get regenerated and the idea of no more Eleven made me go "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" like Anakin Skywalker.
He's so refreshingly not-angsty in this regeneration, thank god. Like, there's clearly old pain and grief and *massive* self-loathing (hello, the Dreamlord, "there's only one person in the universe that hates me as much as you do", I called that plot twist as soon as he said it), but not crippling like it was for Nine and Ten, and he has that experienced wisdom with none of Ten's hubris. I think most of that is owed to Amy Pond meeting him first, with her fairytale name and her great no-nonsense heart and finely-tuned bullshit detection. Their mutual combination of childlike wonder and old souls is so fantastic, and so good.
I love Eleven's relationship with Amy - he clearly adores her, and believes in her, and she surprises him in the best ways, and she's so *fierce* in her beliefs - her Raggedy Doctor, her Rory, the existence of stars. He broke my heart in the finale: so sure he was just going to disappear with no one to remember him, much less mourn him, and then Amy brought him back and yelled at him for being late to her wedding. ♥ That retcon where he takes her hands in the weeping angels two-parter? GENIUS, AND HEARTBREAKING. And when he picks up seven-year-old Amy asleep in the garden, and tells her what a great story they had. *cries* There's probably some crunchy meta in there about the importance of stories, how they linger and change us even when the details have gone fuzzy, but I'm too close to the season right now to dig into it.
I adore Rory, which was completely unexpected - he's so quiet and normal and hapless! But somehow mixed in a way that makes him the biggest sweetheart in the universe instead of Mickey Smith. Maybe it's because after Amy's Choice, he's so unbothered by not always understanding the Doctor, maybe it's the way he's so devoted to Amy (he stood guard over her for 2000 YEARS), maybe it's how he fights for what he cares about even though he's clearly not a violent person. He's really gentle and caring, and they (the writers and the actor) tied in well with his nursing job, the way he touches people, and how he does small careful things like covering the Doctor's (supposedly dead) face with his jacket.
I LOVE that getting married wasn't the end of Amy and Rory's adventures, that is FUCKING AWESOME. And that Amy continues to hit on the Doctor! Bless her heart, the girl has taste and no silly hang-ups. I think Jack Harkness would adore her.
Anyone want to bet against Amy getting both of her boys wrapped around her finger and having a threesome quite soon?
...Yeah, didn't think so. They are so whipped. But they're going to have the best honeymoon EVER.
I have some technical stuff I wanted to mention - the deliberate but subtle lighting in Vincent and the Doctor, how I still don't like the new theme, the little character motif breadcrumbs ("Amy, you're crying" especially) - but mostly I want to say how much I love this show for wearing its heart on its sleeve. It's so rare for television these days to be earnest and optimistic and shamelessly epic, and Doctor Who pulls it off and still makes me cry and laugh and get goosebumps and eye statues with suspicion for the rest of my life like a crazy person, THANKS A LOT MOFFAT, and I love it with all my heart.
I cannot wait for next season. \o/!

I'm so glad there is squee! The people at trivia last night were all Amy-hating and Eleven-hating and it made me sadface. But now I'm :D again! YAY!

I'm still in shock that the ending wasn't heart-crushingly sad, and Amy got to have it ALL. Adventures and the husband and her Doctor, it annoys me when TV always seems to have the message, you can have adventures OR you can be boring and settle down. Why not both?
