We caught up through The Crossing this weekend.

[personal profile] inmyriadbits and I are finally catching up on POI, and saw 3x03-3x05 tonight. Since I'm quite tired, my primary reaction was a) disappointment over the ladies night episode, which was expected given the reaction of my flist, and b) profound amusement that they titled 3x05 'Razgovor', which means 'talk', 'conversation' or 'job interview' in Serbo-Croatian. Which makes it both a nerdy classic film reference AND a nod to Shaw & Finch's arc in the episode.

Well-played, POI writers. Your legacy of excellent nerdery continues promisingly.

As some of you might have guessed from my last post, I fell face-first back into Avengers fandom recently (hahaha, typoed that as 'feel face-first', also accurate). Partially, this is an attempt to finish a WIP that's been sitting around since May 2012 and partially because I was getting a little crazy about Person of Interest. (I broke down in insane tears of frustration over something very stupid involving codecs, and decided to take a break. Basically.)

Tonight, I spent literally an hour trawling through Samuel L. Jackson's IMDB page to play six degrees of separation with the Avengers cast and every other comics movie ever. I was having so much fun that I did not even realize it was taking that long until I looked at the clock.

....But for the record, Samuel L. Jackson is totally in the lead in that game.
spatz: Arthur fighting a projection in rotating hallway (Inception antigravity hallway)
Looks like I failed out of doing a Ten in Ten proper, thanks to getting sick this weekend, but I'm hoping to get back on the horse today. We'll see.

Towards that goal, I've been rewatching Person of Interest S2 (my shiny shiny Blu-Ray discs -- I didn't think that Reese could get any prettier but apparently yes), and had forgotten just how many Die Hard references there were in 2x07 Critical. (I think Leon calling Finch 'bubbe' takes the prize, personally.) Dear POI Writers Room: please continue to be enormous film geeks. *pinches their cheeks*

Tomorrow is chock full of fannish goodness:

1) Person of Interest S3 premiere. (I may die!)

2) Agents of SHIELD premiere. (Coulson did not die!)

3) [personal profile] marthawells's Star Wars tie-in starring Leia, Razor's Edge, comes out. (long live Princess Leia!)
The book is set after A New Hope, and promises to have lots of awesome ladies and Alderaanian space pirates. \o/!

And a writing meme, for reasons:

Ask me a question about one of my fics or series. It can be absolutely anything in any project and I will tell you the honest-to-goodness answer (even on the progress/plans for next chapters of current series).

Don't hold back. Whatever you ask, I'll answer as truthfully and as completely as possible. You can also ask about my writing as a whole, if you like.

Ten in Ten Day 4! I swear I didn't mean for this challenge to start off so 'torturing beloved characters in Asia' themed, it just happened. /o\

So, to give myself a break from all the fic I've been writing, I decided for Day 2 to teach myself how to make GIFs...with middling success. I understand most people use Photoshop, but I don't have it and don't want to pirate it, so on the recommendation of Gizmo Freeware Reviews, I tried GifApp. It's a nice simple program, but not ideal for fannish purposes.

the result, from POI 1x12 )

*sigh* Anyway, I'll have to try again with a different program. Maybe this method, though it sounds needlessly complicated.

Any of ya'll have recommendations regarding freeware or tutorials for this? There's about a million out there, and I'd love to hear from someone with actual experience.

ETA: now [livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits tells me she has Photoshop Elements. Thanks, Linds. :P

Look at the awesome cover art I got for my Regency AU Heartsease, made by [livejournal.com profile] togsos! Finch's purple cravat and his cane, and John's perennial button fail and little smirk! OMG, I could die. ♥

Crossposting is exhausting, though, so pick your poison:

As it is now 3:30 and I have been unsuccessfully trying to sleep for four and a half hours, I have decided to give up. Instead, let me tell ya'll about the funny thing that happened this evening. Apparently, it was a day for hilarious stranger incidents:

[knocking on door around 7pm]
ME: [opens door] Hello?
YOUNG WOMAN WITH PASTA SAUCE: Hi, can you open this jar for me?
ME: Uh, sure?
YOUNG WOMAN WITH PASTA SAUCE: I live next door, I was just trying to make dinner...
ME: [open jar easily, because I'm a massage therapist]
YOUNG WOMAN WITH PASTA SAUCE: Thanks! [runs off, literally, before I can ask her name]
ME: [closes door, starts laughing hysterically]

Kids these days, right? *g*

(Okay, she was like maybe three years younger than me, but I feel like an old old lady these days. Maybe I'll go over with some of the beer that survived the party and get her name, she was kinda cute.)

The Big Bang saga continues:

Word Count: 8,843 / 10,000 minimum
Scenes to complete: 2
Montages Segues to write: 2
Scenes to write wholesale: 1. Still the balcony scene. *sigh*

spatz: Finch peering into air duct (POI Finch peer)
I have just been re-reading Opacity of Paradise and was seized by a sudden, passionate desire to put Finch and Garak in the same room, so they can be dryly sarcastic and critique each other's tailoring while being secretive badasses.

Today has been very quiet and scattered, possibly to make up for this weekend being supremely busy - [livejournal.com profile] inmyriadbits and I threw a spy-themed party, and there was so much alcohol. Seriously, we came out with more alcohol than we bought, and we had a *lot* to start with. But I am triumphant that we managed to throw three separate friend groups together and make it work, plus I managed to keep my red fedora on all night. (I had multiple people think I was Carmen Sandiego. Hmmm, maybe I can do that for Halloween.) And I was...uh, educated about The Fox. WTF, so amazing and ridiculous. I don't think I can ever watch it again for fear of permanently imprinting the tune on my brain, though. Three days later and I am still humming it, argh.

Update on the big bang: I wrote half a scene today! Except oh god, still so much left. Why did I think this was a good idea. (Oh, right: Reese feels. He is a bad influence.) Naturally, my brain is wanting to do [personal profile] astolat's Ten in Ten Challenge instead, and I'm shoving a pillow over its face until after the 15th.
spatz: green bird perched on a hand (Default)
So I was re-watching 2x03 Masquerade, which I love for a lot of reasons ) but this time around, I noticed that Finch is apparently cold-reading untranslated Portuguese while briefing Reese, judging by the computer screen:

Have we seen any other times that Finch did something like this? I'm blanking on him even speaking another language at any point. I mean, unless you count programming languages, in which case he's definitely a polyglot. *g* Reese, on the other hand, has spoken Spanish (badly) and Russian (can't tell); he clearly *didn't* understand Chinese in Matsya Nyaya, but I'd be surprised if he didn't know some form of Arabic, at least basic phrases.

As deadlines loom, a fan's thoughts naturally turn to... getting distracted by other shiny challenge signups. So far I've resisted the siren call (except for Yuletide, but that's a given at this point), but if anyone else is interested:

[community profile] fan_byproducts - a Welcome to Night Vale gift exchange with a name that made me LOL, because I enjoy bad jokes. Signups are open until September 8th!

Idyll Challenge - okay, technically I'm still eyeing this one because it's open-ended like Canadian Shacks. Who doesn't like stories "in which the characters are stuck in a peaceful, comfortable, well-stocked place, usually with some kind of swimming available"? Good decision, fandom.

Small Fandom Big Bang - signups are open until October 31st. (hmmm. Actually. Linds, I think MI4 is eligible. Should we?)

I have definitely *not* resisted the siren call of [community profile] pofinterest_chat, which I think was a good life choice. More people should come play! *pokes everyone*
spatz: Joan Watson clutching her head in exasperation (Elementary Joan headache)
Oh god, apparently I am now that fan who starts a fight in the comments of the Yuletide rules post, thereby causing a panic and harshing everyone's squee. *headdesk* I imagine the spirit of Yuletide will prevail; I just wish people weren't misunderstanding the new rule as DQ'ing all the sub-fandoms, just that the mods *may* rule one ineligible. (Also, I wish Elementary wasn't disqualified. D:)

...I suppose since, as of next month, I will have spent over half my life in fandom, it was about time I got my BOFQ membership card. It still comes with a 'get off my lawn you kids' stick and free dialup, right?

I'm trying to decide it would help or not to suggest that they just eliminate the If the character is in the main character in the fandom, the fandom itself may be ruled ineligible part of the new rule but keep the 'no characters are eligible with over 2000 works' part, thereby allowing people to request the permutation fandoms but only with minor characters. You'll still have a problem if you want to request, say, Holmes/Watson fic for A Study in Emerald, or Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot fic for Arthurian legend, or a Joan Watson character study, but you could get around a lot using the optional details. *eyes comment thread warily* Maybe in the morning.

To encourage me to keep on track with my POI Big Bang:

Word Count: 7,076 / 10,000 minimum
Scenes to complete: 2
Training montages Segues to write: 4
Scenes to write wholesale: 2, including the climactic balcony scene, so help me.
spatz: Reese looking at Finch with hand-drawn heart (Reese-Finch hearteyes)
Okay, what were the odds of two separate BNFs each writing 15K+ asteroid-on-a-collision-course-with-Earth fics in two completely unrelated fandoms set in New York City, all within a week of each other?

...Better or worse than the odds of an asteroid *actually* hitting Earth?

I haven't read [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63's Death Before Dusk (Elementary) yet, but [personal profile] astolat's A Really Private Person (POI) was awesome and epic as hell.
spatz: Reese looking at Finch with hand-drawn heart (Reese-Finch hearteyes)
I'm still a little surprised at my own obsession with Person of Interest, sometimes. Like, I've been obsessed with fandoms like this before, right? But they were either passing flings that I see again once a year or so, or something like Supernatural and Avengers, which are both HUGE fandoms. It felt like it made more sense to be so crazy when you had that much backup. Whereas POI is pretty darn small -- small enough to be in Yuletide for two years running (though definitely not next year! go fandom!).

I think it's the way that most of the people who watch the show end up casual fans, and then there's the small minority that end up sobbing over references to eggs benedict, and laughing hysterically at the boys and their inappropriate lack of stalking boundaries, and debating AI sentience or the morality of vigilante justice vs the government playing Big Brother.

And I love it.

I'm just saying: it's a little disconcerting to have a fandom this small eat my brain so hard.
spatz: Reese looking at Finch with hand-drawn heart (Reese-Finch hearteyes)
I think my brain just turned itself inside out.

In an AWESOME way.

I have to start a roadtrip to Atlanta in 8 hours, so I have to sleep, but can someone help me figure out what happened in a specific scene? Texas decided a fucking tornado watch was in order tonight, and when they interrupted the broadcast we missed about 2-3 minutes after the commercial break that followed Read more... )

In the meantime, I have to figure how badly jossed all my fics are. Except the regency one, that's fine. And the terrible one I just started this morning. Oooh, I think the Ordos AU is going to be way better, though....

Person of Interest
Finch/Reese, 400 words

John didn't flinch. )
spatz: Reese smiling with camera (Reese happy lurker)
After reaching page 56 on my dashboard and passing 4 AM, I made a thing comparing Person of Interest and North By Northwest. (spoilers for 2x21)

I think that makes this three posts in 5 hours. And I didn't even post the fic I wrote. ALREADY MOST PRODUCTIVE MONDAY EVER. (...goddammit, POI, stop eating my brain.)

Now I am going to sleep.
spatz: Finch peering into air duct (POI Finch peer)
I'm too tired to talk about the serious stuff in this episode, and I suspect things are just gonna turn upside down on Thursday and leave us screaming in agony all summer anyway, at which point I plan to flail extensively, BUT. I can't be the only one who noticed Read more... )
